“What was an OK hotel was destroyed by the reception staff”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 February 2011

OK first the positives: The location for the station and price were very good and the room was a reasonable size and decorated to a decent level. The breakfast was very good and the lady serving was super friendly.

Now the negatives: The room was very cold. The shower was dirty. Despite being a non smoking room it stank of stale cigarette smoke. There were no plug sockets that accepted standard European plugs (the other Italian hotels we stayed in at least had one if not several). The entry to the hotel did not make it clear where the reception was (turns out it was the reception of the ABC hotel but this was never made clear) the check in staff were not particularly friendly veering towards being rude.

The very worst thing though was on check out, there was a rail strike on (not the fault of the hotel obviously) but as my Italian was not very good I asked the receptionist for a little more information or some advice on other modes of transport. She seemed to take great delight in the fact that we were stranded, offered no advice what-so-ever and gave the impression of being, not only unconcerned by the situation of her customers but actually revelling in the fact that they were experiencing difficulties. This left a very bitter taste in the mouth and changed this from being a reasonable budget hotel into a place that I really would not recommend.

It was cheap with a good location for the station. However it was made extremely unenjoyable by the staff (except the breakfast lady) and the fact that basic aspects of the room were found wanting (heat, smell and cleanliness). Hopefully my experience was just a one off and I guess other will find this a great budget option; however I really cannot recommend this hotel.

“Comfortable hotel in all respects”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 October 2010

Comfortable hotel in all respects
As if often the case in Italy, Casa dei Gonzaga is one of several hotels found in this building. I am grateful that a previous review on Trip Advisor noted that the prominent sign outside is for ABC Hotel - if I didn’t know that in advance we might still be driving looking for it. We had some local Italian friends meet us there during our stay and they, too, were very grateful that I had told them to look for ABC Hotel. Casa dei Gonzaga is well-run with efficient service both at the front desk and in the breakfast room. One of the hotel staff was particularly kind to wait for us to bring the car around so she could show us how to access the parking lot and to escort us to our room. Our room was very comfortable; the bedroom window even had a screen (not common in Italy). The bedroom was on the small side but it had a small refrigerator, a desk, nightstands with good reading lights, a large armoire and ample floor space. The bathroom was a good size and had a remote-controlled skylight that let in plenty of light. Our room was accessed through an interior courtyard, up a flight of stairs to a shared balcony. We felt very secure and private. Everything was very clean and well-maintained. The breakfast buffet was plentiful and included scrambled eggs and several kinds of cooked meats in addition to the usual assortments of breads, rolls, cornetti, cheese, cold cuts, etc. Once we parked our car, we walked everywhere. Excellent hotel!

“In front of the station and highly recommendable”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2010

I highly recommend this hotel. It is part of a complex of hotels (ABC and two others I think). I enjoyed my stay, the room was spacious, had everything, very friendly staff, great breakfast. I almost skipped the scrambled eggs b/c they look as if they didn't know how to prepare them but when I tried the scramble egss they were delicious, no additional ingredients just farm eggs (from a real hen!). Good recommendations on what to do, rightly in front of the station, and on top of everything, when I checked out I got a very nice packed gift that couldn't opened until the night. It was one of the traditional sweets from the region! I was impressed with the hotel and staff but the gift was a great plus.

“Nice Hotel in mantova”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2009

A small hotel in mantova, (like 5-7 room). Have a private parking.
Clean and close to the center. Breakfast with sweets from Mantova. although close to the train station (I have arrived by train, just cross the street) is a good starting point to visit mantova.
