“The best place to stay in Baveno...”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 October 2010

Upon arrival we were immediately upgraded to the ‘Sir Winston Churchill Suite” which is Lido Palace Hotel’s grandest suite...The suite, with acres of space and a separate jacuzzi room, really was impressive and it got our holiday off to a fantastic start. The hotel staff are very friendly and helpful and extremely polite, immediately making you feel at home. The hotel is olde-worlde, which is perfect as the boutique/quirky type of hotel appeals to us when travelling for pleasure – there’s nothing pretentious about this hotel!

The views of the lake from the room are magnificent and waking up to this every morning for a week felt like paradise. We had breakfast included in our rate and this was all very nice, with some very special cappuccinos! (A special thanks to Maria for not getting upset when I accidentally set fire to the toast/toaster!!!) We stayed the last week of September and the first 6 days were really warm (20-25C), with only the last day being rainy… So while we didn’t get the chance to try out the pool the rest of the hotel’s amenities were great… The town of Baveno itself is a little bit quiet at that time of year but there are a couple of nice restaurants and gelateria and, further afield in Stresa, there’s a wide choice of restaurants ranging from good value to pricey. We had a car for the duration of our stay and I’d recommend hiring a car as there are so many places to explore on lake Maggiore, which without a car would be pretty difficult – we hired a car through Hertz at Milanpese airport for £140 for the week (with a free upgrade to the next model, it must have been our lucky week!). Stresa is a €10-13 cab ride away, so on the nights that you don’t fancy driving or can’t agree on a designated driver it’s still quite reasonable to get around.

We had a fantastic week at the Lido Palace Hotel and while we were spoilt with the room upgrade it wouldn’t have been any less enjoyable with the standard lake view room we’d booked and paid for. (For UK travellers book through British Airways as there are a few extras thrown in.)

Thank you to the hotel staff for making our stay so memorable!

“A grand old hotel with unique ambience and great views over the lake”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2010

We had a very relaxing holiday at Lido Palace. The food was very good and all staff were efficient and attentive. In the dining room we were taken care of by two exceptional characters in Roberto and Maria who made us, and all the other guests, feel very welcome. The views from our very comfortable room (with a huge modern bathroom) over the hotel grounds and to the Borromean Islands must be the best in Maggiore. The nearby islands, Taranto Gardens, Stressa, Arona and Rocco Borromea are easy to reach by bus, ferry and or train and offer holiday makers a good insight into the history and geography of the area. The cable car ride up Motorne mountain on clear day offers rewarding views over the lake and much further.

“Nothing was too much trouble”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 24 September 2010

Have just returned from a week long holiday at this hotel. Everything was excellent and nothing was too much trouble for any of the staff. Our particular thanks to Manuela on the front desk and Roberto and Maria in the restaurant. A stay here is a must. You will not be disappointed.

“A wonderful hotel and hospitality”

The Lido Palace was a wonderful experience. The hospitality was second to none, the food was fantasic and the service was great. The location on the lake was amazing as you got beautiful sunrises and sunsets everyday. The only thing I would have liked softer pillows for a more comfortable sleep, the bedrooms were very spacious and very nice.
I would recomend this hotel to all of our friends a wonderful relaxing holiday

“Traditional Italian Hospitality at this Lovely Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2010

Just returned from a 1 week stay with husband and friends at this traditional and unique hotel on the shores of Lake Maggiore.
On arrival just before midday we were shown directly to our rooms personally by the friendly receptionist. To our delight we had been upgraded to Deluxe rooms on the 2nd floor rather than the 'eaves' rooms on the 4th floor we had booked, probably because the hotel was not busy, but a welcome surprise none the less! High ceilings and traditional furnishings are the style in the bedrooms with original shutters inside and out of the windows and heavy drapes. The bathroom was excellent with twin sinks and a spa bath with large showerhead over and marble clad walls and spotlessly clean. The small balcony which looked out on the spectacular views across the lake past the Borromean Islands to the mountains beyond definately had the 'wow ' factor!
The ambiance in this hotel is of staying in the somewhat faded elegance of a traditional Italian Villa as guests of the D'Amico family who own and run the hotel. There are many old and also family photos dotted around the walls and great store is taken to let you know that Winston Churchill spent his honeymoon here and there are also connections to Queen Victoria - there are not only photos and letters, but also large statues of both in the grounds.
The dining room and lounge areas run the whole width of the hotel and the front is entirely of glass which overlooks the lake which makes it a beautiful place to dine or just sit and relax. Service is friendly and efficient and the food is good [we were on half board and felt no need to eat elsewhere]. There are also pretty terraces outside where you can have a snack lunch or drinks.
The hotel is on a slight rise up from the road and the pretty mature gardens lead down to the swimming pool where there are plenty of loungers and parasols. One downside is the proximity of the pool area to the road which means there is a fair bit of traffic noise here. An alternative is to cross the road to the hotels private piece of lake side which also has loungers and parasols and is somewhat quieter.
It is just a short stroll into Baveno centre where the ferries leave for Stresa, the Borromean Islands and various other destinations on the lake. There is also a train station and busses .
If you want a hotel that is bang up to date and just like numerous other hotels around the world, then the Lido Palace is not for you, but if you are looking for somewhere a little different and in a magnificent position, the do try this delightful hotel, I doubt you will be disapointed!
