“Lovely location, but...”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 September 2011

My wife and I were traveling on a motorbike and we had just dropped down out of torrential rain through France and Switzerland, to glorious sunshine and the beautiful Lake Maggiore. Off street parking for the bike was good, the location right by the lake is excellent, and the price compared with others in the area is very good; but. The owner and staff were friendly and tried fairly hard to please, but somehow just missed the mark. The room was small and very average, being on the side of the hotel. The very worst was the food which was truly awful. I guess that we could have eaten elsewhere so that need not be a show stopper. As a one nighter it was fine, but for a longer term holiday stop, it would not be our choice even though the location can not be faulted.

Room Tip: Ask for a lake view room, and eat elsewhere

“Beautiful situation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2009

The real reason for staying here is the situation, on the lake, overlooking the Borromean islands. Make sure you get a lake-view room. The others overlook the main road and if you're trying to save a few Euros, you might as well go and look for somewhere else.
We were very pleasantly received by the owner's wife, who was most helpful in all respects, with advice on where to go and what to see. The hotel is simple, but very clean and the view from the rooms is extraordinary.
You can walk to Baveno, but the first 500 or so meters are directly on the road, without a pavement, so isn't terribly pleasant. There's nothing directly around the hotel, so you either need a car to get to Baveno or Stresa, or have to use the hotel restaurant.
The restaurant directly overlooks the lake. The food is simple, traditional italian (not American-italian), unpretentious. The owner came to take orders and recommendations. I certainly didn't sense what the other reviewers mentioned. It isn't a fancy restaurant, the menu is simple, but correct (and to the reviewer who complained that fish was served with nothing else, that's the way traditional italian restaurants work, you have to order the "contorni" seperately).

“Hotel Romagna on marvelous Lake Maggiore”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 September 2005

Lake Maggiore is beautiful and in our opinion much nicer than Lake Garda. There are some quaint little towns and the lake is easier to navigate by car. The road runs along the lake with magnificent views and there are no ugly buildings, construction work or traffic delays as you find around the south of Lake Garda. Baveno is just a short drive north from Stresa and both are beautiful towns. Stresa seems to have more of the 4 and 5 star hotels and is more developed than Baveno. One must drive as far as Ascona and Locarno as they are really worth while towns to vist and one has to visit at least one of the three islands on the lake as they are really charming. We chose Isola Bella which we reached by a nifty little speed boat (cheaper than the larger boat) The island has some wonderful porcelain, exquisite masks and other lovely gifts to take home (Stresa also tended to have a lot to offer unlike the tourist "junk" that one sees in Sirmione, Lake Garda)
Hotel Romagna is situated right on the lake so that your balcony is directly at the waters edge overlooking one of the islands so we had a stunning view and were in a very nice area. Their restuarant overlooked the lake and also had a lovely view and although their breakfast was very nice the evening meal was not good at all and the waiter was quite rude. If you order a fish dish that is what you get - a piece of fish on a plate with nothing else unless you order the vegetables as a separate dish. There are many restuarants down the road just a few minutes by car so one can always have dinner there. The non carpeted room was clean, had a lovely bathroom, the bed was quilted and an extra bed for our 5 year old was supplied free of charge and they also had air conditioning, a television and hair dryer. I would say this is a good value hotel and suitable if you are spending time touring the lake as they do not have a pool and their beach is not that nice for swimming. We paid 105 euros per night for two adults and a child aged 5 years for bed and breakfast during August.
