We stayed for three nights from 26 August after visiting Milan and then travelled south.
To start with Lake Como is spectacular. I am also glad I took advice from trip adviser and stayed out of Como city which appears to be an outer suburb of Milan. The lake does lose the city influence once past Como city and Bellagio is a picture perfect town.
We drove from Milan and intended using Bellagio as a base to explore the northern Italy and Switzerland. The only problem with that plan was Bellagio and its surrounds were so nice we only spent a day driving into Switzerland, we did learn from that trip it is well worth driving around the area and using the Ferry's to get around the lake.
The Hotel itself is right in the middle of Bellagio. It is a pleasant family run, clean and roomy establishment with helpful hosts and an excellent Breakfast. It was quiet hot during our stay and we found the aircon worked well and our balcony room overlooking the courtyard with glimpses of the lake was lovely. Parking was difficult but not impossible; you just need to be patient finding a car spot within easy walking distance.
Everything you need is within a few hundred metres of the hotel. While I am sure some of the other hotels on the shoreline are of a better standard there is no doubt they cost much more and you lose some of that personal service. Our experience of eating at a couple of the major hotels restaurants was variable with the Metropol's service so hopeless I would never stay at the hotel. Having said that we also had fantastic meals in other eateries and found the shopping was great.
Bellagio at this time of year was a tourist hot spot, the whole town was geared towards tourists so if you are looking for an authentic Italian experience you wont find it in August. I think most of the locals were on holiday somewhere else and what you will find is a spectacular town in a spectacular location.
We found this hotel pleasant, great value, in a lovely building and with good facilities but remember if you want a pool, spa, mini bar and all those extras you will have to pay more and stay somewhere else. I would stay here again and will recommend this hotel to friends.
