Bergamo is beautiful and our stay at the Hotel Commercio was one we will definitely repeat. The hotel entrance is a plain unassuming set of modern doors off a shopping street. They hide a secret! The doors open out into a charming seventeenth century building, part of a cloistered monastery, some of which is crumbling beautifully within sight of the upper hotel windows. You are greeted by your host family who speak some english and are keen to make you feel at home and welcome in their city. Breakfast was a simple yet wholesome and filling "continental" style. Our room was basic, clean and excellent value. Plenty of clean fluffy towels and a lovely hot shower. The price was very good but we received a welcome and facilities worthy of a much higher price. This is not a five star business hotel but if you want to experience an incredible second century walled city and feel that you are the personal guests of a local family then look no further. I would highly recommend this hotel as a base for a family holiday. We had intended to travel to Milan during our stay but there is so much history within Bergamo that we did not leave!
