“value for money”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 September 2010

More of a restaurant with rooms, and very well placed for exploring the old town. This is no luxury hotel, but it doesn't claim to be, and the prices are fair, both for the room and in the restaurant. The room and bathroom were rather dated, but clean and functional, and we had a superb meal despite arriving rather late. Overall, we found Il Gourmet quite charming.

“throw back to the 60's and the world hardest mattress collide”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 April 2010

I feel the nice reveiws to this hotel come from the veiws and also location which is perfect people need to take heed of the 2 and 3 star reviews
my wife and i stayed in a double room which over looked the city and was awsome and as said previously the location is next to the bus route and 5 mins from the main street in the the city alta

but then it goes wrong the rooms all need a serious redecorating (we looked at others while going past to compare) and they need to know for over 100 euros a night what a mattress feels like to sleep on and sheets need to be able to move freely it was like sleeping on bedrock with a plyboard cover and the constant bells from the many local churches are lovly to listen to once or twice untill you try to sleep and i appoligise if you feel i exagerate, until you experience it yourself

i would definatly shop around first before trying

“ask for a room with a view!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 22 November 2009

we have visited Bergamo before and stayed at the Agnello D'Oro which we loved. This time it was fully booked so we chose Il Gourmet. Its a good location, extremely convenient for the airport bus ( about a 3 minute walk) Its so close to the Citta Alta walls that you can pretend you are actually within them and its right near the San Vigilio funiculare. Beware of that though! If you have a room at the back, you will have the funiculare running past your window so ask for a room with a view! Our room 16 was fine, a little bit tired, but warm, comfortable, very spacious and with a great view. Breakfast Saturday was fine but Sunday not so good as the bread was not as fresh as we would have liked.
All in all, a recommended stay but we will still try to book the Agnello D'oro when we visit beautiful Bergamo again

  • Liked — the view and the comfy bed
  • Disliked — breakfast bread

“Il Gourmet isOK”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 September 2007

The other reviews give a pretty accurate impression of the place.

The rooms themselves are adequate but remind me of college dormitory rooms from the 1960s and 70s. The furnishings are basic and institutional, but they do the job. Nothing inspiring, nothing awful here. A couple of the rooms (those on the west side on the second floor) have spectacular views over the city and valley. Those on the east side look at the funicular. The staff was friendly and spoke just about enough English to make basic communication possible.

We had breakfast twice at the hotel and found it surprisingly disappointing. For an outfit that runs a restaurant, they provide very little in the way of food or choice at breakfast. I think that breakfast is optional, and at the price, one should not even think of it. It bespeaks an attitude of getting by, rather than trying.

We didn't eat in the hotel restaurant, which was never very crowded (or noisy) and looked to us like a failing venture. We did (unfortunately) eat at Da Mimmo in the center of the High City. It's a large, evidently very popular but quite mediocre restaurant with spotty service. Maybe locals are treated better than we were.

A smaller wine bar, Cafe Donizetti (named after the local hero, of course) was terrific and a welcome break from the standard Italian meal structure. One could order little plates of wonderful local specialities to go with the terrific wines, rather than follow the antipasto-primi-secondi formula.

The High City is beautiful and compact. All the hotels up there are handy to all the sites, and it's easy to get down to the Low City and back up on a funicular. Il Gourmet is OK, but you might want to check out the alternatives.

“Comfortable and Convenient Hotel”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 August 2007

Okay, the interiors and furnishings are dated and dull. However, this hotel is in a great location with beautiful views. Our biggest priority was sufficient air conditioning, and we were cool and comfortable in Room 23. Best of all, we had a private patio that we enjoyed. Yes, the funicular passed by every few minutes -- but we smiled and raised our wine glasses in greeting. I would probably skip the breakfast next trip. It's nothing special. However, we had a very good dinner at the restaurant one evening. The excellent service and cool air made up for any decorating deficiencies at Il Gourmet.
