We loved Bergamo and Albergo Il Sole provided a convenient and pleasant base. Friendly, laid-back management / staff. We requested a double room but probably got a triple in the end as there was an extra bed (#106). So, from a size standpoint the room was more than adequate. Bathroom was also quite large. Not a fancy hotel but it served us well. Given that there's no air-conditioning the room did get warm and the desk fan helps some, but not enough. We got some cross-ventiliation by keeping the bathroom and main room windows open when we were awake.

We also enjoyed a very good meal at the hotel's restaurant.

Spent 2 nights here. room was small, bathroom is the tiniest I have ever encountered but this hotel is more about the location, right in the heart of the old town. At 85 euros a night including a ( very basic ) breakfast it is good value compared to the prices of other hotels in the area.
Was glad we stayed in the old town as the new town just didnt have the same appeal!!
Would recommend it to anyone who wants a no-frills base for exploring the area.
Bergamo is a perfect base for visiting lake Garda AND Lake Como by train and since the public transport is good there is no real need for a car....all the public transport link timetables can be easily accessed on the net ( local buses and trains to further afield ).
As a previous reviewer mentioned have a drink in the bar at the back of the citta alta funicilor station, spectacular views from the outside terrace.

I chose this hotel in Bergamo based on price and on a positive listing in one of my guidebooks. It is right on the corner of the Piazza Vecchia in the Citta Alta so I couldn’t have asked for a better location. The restaurant on the ground floor is also highly rated.

I was assigned a single room on the top level (Room #101) which was adequate but nothing great (the bathroom had all new fixtures, however). It had a king size bed so could be offered as a double, but it would be almost claustrophobic for two people. The weather in Bergamo was very warm and this little room had only one small window plus a table fan. The fan helped some but the room never cooled off, even at night. For the price I didn't expect air conditioning so that's not an implied criticism. I didn’t see any of the other rooms so I can’t judge whether the others were any larger or cooler, but I suspect that the ones on the same level (#102 and #103) were equally stifling in the hot weather. They might be fine in other seasons.

The hotel takes credit cards (not always the case) and the garden restaurant was delightful. A nice continental breakfast was included in the price.

just great.....i can say no more....try to book for a table in the garden...great staff, great food, great value for money
