I have been traveling to Bergamo quite often for buisness. I typically stay at the Arli but have stayed at most of the other hotels in the area that are of similar quality. I've always been intriqued by the San Marco because the lobby looks very nice and I have heard the rooftop restruant is excellent. The room I had at the Arli this time had no internet access in the room (wireless at the Arli can be spotty) so I decided to check out and try the San Marco. I was very dissappointed by how old the rooms are in this hotel. Like many of the other hotels in the area (Arli, Best Western) some of the rooms are updated and some are not. I was given a very old room on the 3rd floor. The day I checked in the floor I was on and my room smelled kind of musty, I think maybe it was from the heating system being used for the first time that year. They shower didn't drain right, the water pressure was very bad, the doors don't lock themselves (when you leave the room you have to put your key back in to lock the door), the light fixtures are all 30+ years old. To top it off I never could get the internet to connect even though I had a pretty good signal. I am a computer programmer and travel quite frequently so I usually am pretty good at getting these sort of things to work, I also couldn't get my tablet or iphone to connect to the wireless so I am pretty sure it was something wrong on their end. Also the bed was pretty hard, I think that's more of an Italian thing as most hotels I stay at in Europe have the same issue.
On the positive side the room did have a small balcony (no good view though), the breakfast was much better than the Arli or the Best Western. The staff were all very courteous, I left my bag in the morning before I checked in and latet that evening when I was given my room the bag was already in the room waiting for me. The good staff cannot make up for the fact they should finish remodeling all the roooms so I will not be returning to this hotel again.
