The Bellevue is ideal if you are arriving by train at Genova Piazza Principe rail station (or by air - the airport bus stops in the square). The staff are both friendly and helpful, but everywhere you look you will discover maintenance backlogs. That said, the hotel provides a good and reasonably priced base from which to explore this fascinating city. Genova stretches along the Ligurian coast and rises into the mountains behind. It is very hilly indeed, and operates at a number of levels. For public transport enthusiasts the city is a must: with bus, trolleybus, metro, rail (standard gauge, narrow gauge, rack), elevator, funicular, and a fascinating cross between funicular and vertical elevator to choose from, the nerd will be in seventh heaven. The system comprehensively covers the city so, while a fair amount of shoe leather needs to be consumed if the place is to be properly known (getting lost in the old city is a must), there's a less tiring althernative for covering the longer distances.
