“A good place to stay in Genoa”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 April 2011

This was another pick from Trip Advisor and I am very glad we stayed here. The Cairoli Hotel was clean and modern, the breakfast substantial, and the owner/manager was a great help when I needed to print boarding passes. Also, I really appreciated having an elevator. Two wonderful art museums were just down the street on Via Garibaldi, there were restaurants and shops all around, and we even were able to buy a phone at a nearby Vodaphone store. A short walk took us to Genoa's acquarium and lunch at a waterfront restaurant. We walked everywhere and enjoyed being in Genoa, a city we had never visited before. Contrary to other sources, Genoa was not a "gritty" place and it was a good stepping stone for a trip to Vernazza.

Room Tip: Booked through the Inernet - owner speaks English.

“Bad experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 March 2011

I booked this hotel due to the fine reviews in Tripadvisor but I cannot recommend the hotel. When I arrived in the afternoon to check in at the prebooked, confirmed hotel Cairoli, I was told by the hotel that they had ran out of rooms and booked me at another hotel further away from the city centre. I was upset by the treatment and demanded a hotel nearby or closer to the city centre. The hotel I was given, Hotel Veronese, gave me a room that felt more like a basement room than a hotel room. It was clean but the door to the bathroom could hardly be closed since the door was damaged. I heard just about everything that went on in the entire building during the night and hardly got any sleep.
I don't know why Italian hotels are the ones, and the only ones to my experience, that over book and forces you to another hotel, when you have had a confirmation. It happend to me and my husband in Rome as well, less than a year ago.

Dear Madame,
with reference to your review on TripAdvisor, we deeply regret to be considered a “bad experience” but we can assure you that there really were problems with the room assigned to you and not as you assumed because of over-booking problems.
With regard to the first two hotels suggested to you and that have been turned down, we can assure that they both are in the city centre and of good quality, while the one you choose was the only one to have room in the Aquarium area, and given your criticism we won’t certainly recommend it to any other customer of ours.
Reiterating our apologies for what has happened, if you should return and visit Genoa, we would be more than pleased to be able to have you as our guest at Hotel Cairoli.

“If you are planning to visit Genoa, this is the hotel to pick”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 March 2011

I stayed for one week at the Hotel Cairoli and I felt very comfortable and at home there. The staff were all friendly and informative, always willing to answer questions in English - nothing was too much trouble. My room was quiet, clean and comfortable and I loved the unique design of my room. My impression is that a great deal of care has gone into the running and design of this hotel. As it was the end of February, I could not take advantage of the sun terrace but it would certainly be a great place to sit and read a book in warmer weather.
In addition, the hotel is very central, close to the amazing palazzos and the centre of Genoa. An added bonus is the highly recommended Restaurant Gaia which is literally in a small alleyway adjacent to the hotel. I would certainly return to this hotel and Genoa. I had the opportunity to see inside a chain hotel during my stay and the Hotel Cairoli was infinitely better.

“Ideal location for sightseeing”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 January 2011

The Cairoli is ideally located for sightseeing in Genoa, in a pedestrianised street close to most of the major attractions, museums and shops, though like many Italian hotels, it is on an upper floor, accessed by a lift. The staff are exceptionally friendly, helpful and knowledgable - with good English.

The rooms are rather small, but well-designed, and there is a welcoming and comfortable foyer and lounge with TV and internet, and delightful artistic decor. Also, in a noisy enclosed city, it is a relief to have access to a roof terrace.

Breakfast is good, with excellent coffee.

“Helpfull manager but also some minor points”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 December 2010

We stayed here for 3 nights. We slept in the quadrupple room, which has two rooms with a door inbetween. The room was ok except the smell of the toilet wich kept comming about twice a day.
Breakfast is average. Disappointing was the fact that breakfast didn't start any earlier than 7:45, a little bit late with two young children. Our first breakfast didn't start any earlier than 8:45 because somebody overslept.
The manager is very helpfull with everything that is a big plus!
The elevator is a disaster, it is very small. Getting the lugage up was taking 5 tours.
Even though smoking seems not to be allowed. The hall of the rooms was full of smoke. One night I couldn't get to sleep because came into my room.
The location is very good. You can walk everything right out of the hotel. Parking you can do better with Olimpo than with Minerva, not only because of the 1 euro that Olimpo is cheaper.
The hotel had free wifi.
