We came to the Moderno Verdi for 2 nights. We were boarding a cruise from Genoa and arrived a couple of days prior to embarkation. Moderno Verdi Hotel has an excellent location, on the square (Giuseppe Verdi Square (Piazza)) just across the street from Brignole train station.
Staff was nice; we arrived late and were starving; it was a Sunday and nothing was open in the surroundings. We asked if there was a restaurant in house and although they were about to close, waited for us. Food was normal and wine was reasonably priced. Waiter was diligent. Rooms were comfortable enough; we got an interior room which was a blessing because it was very quiet. They have a small bar. En general, its an average hotel, nothing outstanding, with nice staff and good location. With no great expectations, it could be a hotel to come back.

After touring between Liguria and Toscany, a two-night stopover was spent in Genoa and the Moderno Verdi by the train station. It is a very classic old hotel with upgraded rooms (small but functional), bathroom ok standard and breakfast above average with Italian measurments. It is conveniently located on walking distance to the city and the old-town (very nice), which also gives access to the harbour area. Genoa was a postitive surprise (most Italians only recommend the Aquarium in Genoa as worth seeing, which we did not), and definately the old-town part.

A little difficult to find at first, it's about 20 yards from the Genoa Brignale railway station, to the left of the entrance. Look for a big 'M' sign with the the word 'Garage' underneath.

Checkin was fairly quick and reasonably friendly, although they did keep my drivers license until I checked out (not sure why that policy is, but at least it wasn't my passport).

Hotel is fairly nice inside, and well kept. Generally quite comfortable.

In general it was a fairly good stay. I quite liked the breakfast, which involved pastries, cold meats, cheese and scrambled eggs. More then enough to start the day.

The hotel is a little out of the way from the main part of the city, but you can walk to most places fairly easily. If your looking for something comfortable and modern, but are on a budget, this place would probably suit.

No way this is a 4 star hotel by any standard. The receptionist was outright rude and impatient. He made us feel like we were a bother for him. I would not stay here again just before of that. Rooms are acceptable. Location is next to the train station, which can be useful for those planning to explore the region. I have stayed in Golden Tulip hotels before. This was the worst and not up to their standards.
