We booked in for two nights on the basis of the Trip Advisor reviews - and wished we hadn't! The hotel can be at best described as a hostel. We booked a double room - and ended up in twin beds. It was supposed to be a romantic break, but there was nothing romantic about the hotel - cold bare floors, dingy 1960s decor, hard narrow beds, ancient plumbing. It was incredibly dark, but we couldn't open our window shutters because the window opened on to the street - with the pavement of a main road at eye level. It felt like being in a convent - and I wonder if that is what this hotel previously was.
It is described as being in the heart of the city - it isn't. It was a good half hour walk to the centre (and we're young, fit people) and there were no bars, shops or restaurants nearby. Walking back in the dark at night felt decidedly dodgy. Not pleasant.
It would be fine for school parties or backpackers but anyone expecting a hotel will be disappointed to say the least. We barely spent any time there - just slept, had a shower and left as quickly as possible each day. The breakfast was also well below par for the price. There were only a handful of pastries available each day - the bread apparently having run out earlier - and absolutely nothing else. We felt quite cheated.
The only thing that has stopped me giving this one star is that the reception staff were lovely - they gave us a map of the city, explained where the sights were and there was free internet access (15 minutes), and is was basically clean.
But I feel I have to be brutally honest - we trusted the reviews on Trip Advisor which were way off the mark. We weren't expecting luxury, but this was one of the grimmest hotels I have stayed in. It is dated, shabby and dismal. The air of gloom is all-pervading. I wish we had paid a few pounds more a night and booked into a hotel that was more central and could truly call itself a hotel, not a hostel, as this most certainly is.
