“Good quality hotel close to Brignole Railway Station”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

We stayed at this hotel for two nights in July 2010. We were given a quiet room high up which was good however it was quite a small room (on the end of a corridor), and it only had a shower- no bath. The windows didn't open but there was air conditioning. The room was very clean and although soon in need of a refurb it was a nice room. The hotel also has a small gym with running machine, bike and stepper plus a few weights. The breakfast was plentiful- everything you'd want really. Overall it was a nice hotel but in need of a bit of a facelift- plus the location although great for Brignole was quite a walk away from the harbour. I think a swimming pool would have been nice but it didn't have one.
Top tip- most shops are closed on Sundays in Genova (as we found out!).

“Decent in every respect”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 August 2010

We stayed only one night at the hotel as it was our first stop in Italy after flying from the US. The hotel is located across the road from the train station and an easy walk into town where a variety of restaurants, shops etc.

Our room was absolutely fine for the price we paid. The bed was good, the room sufficiently large and the bathroom was very clean. The decor of the hotel is a little dated but we didn't find this to be a problem at all.

Breakfast was good with a decent range of options and nice cappacinos.

My only complaint is the ridiculous price they charge for internet access in your room (over 20 Euros for 24 hours). There is one computer in the lobby to use if you need it but at 2 Euros for 15 minutes you don't want to spend too much time on it.

“Exceptionally rude reception staff let this hotel down badly”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2010

The location is good for both business and tourism...across the street from Genova Brignole station, and across the road from direct buses into the historic part of Genova. Day trips to Cinque Terra, Pisa and Lucca were easy to plan for leisure.
Inside, the hotel floor decoration is dated and looks a little like a set design Michael Jackson would have used in the 80s. The rooms were a tad too small for two people, but very clean and well furnished. The bathroom was, however, very small. The shower was difficult to get into and had an ill fitted water saving shower head that did not work very well. The bed was good, the windows in the room were excellently sound proofed from outside noise and fitted with curtins that blocked all light for extra sleep.
The reception staff appear to have developed an unfortunate attitude toward the hotel customers and at times it felt like they were collectively going out of their way to be difficult. For example, the hotel has a laundry service, but when I asked about a coin operated laundry nearby the woman at the desk simply informed me that 'These do not exist in Genova.' (Yes, she did understand my question, and she was, of course, passing on incorrect information.)
As a side note, this hotel consistently made the worst cups of coffee I've had anywhere in the world, which is saying something. Otherwise, the breakfast was good. If you have any ironing, you can use the hotel laundry service, or PERSIST with the reception staff...eventually they will refer you to a chamber maid that will show you to an ironing board, but probably only after they've told you this service is not available at the hotel. I should note the rest of the staff were personable: Only the reception desk were a force unto themselves.

“Overall a very good choice for a relaxing stay.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2010

We have stayed at the Star President on a number of occasions. Situated in a very good location just by the main train station where there is also a bus station. Getting into the center is easy either by bus or a pleasant 15 minute walk.

As you enter the hotel you will be impressed by the main lobby where the bar is also located. The superior room where we stayed last time was very spacious, comfortable and good value for money. The bed is massive and the bathroom is large, clean and bright.

The TV is a good size and there is a well stocked minibar for a late night tipple.

The staff are pleasant - a special mention must be given to Enrico who was extremely helpful last time we stayed when there was a mix up with our booking. He sorted it out for us straight away and made sure we were totally satisfied.

Overall a very good choice for a relaxing stay.
