My wife and I stayed at The Charming Room in Vernazza for 5 nights in early Sept 2011, one of our stops in an 8 week holiday through Continental Europe, UK and Ireland.
One of the things we tried to do throughout our holiday was choose places that in themselves were unique, charming or different so that where we were staying contributed to part of the holiday, and staying in the Charming Room certainly lived up to this requirement.
Maria and Giacomo Capellini run the Charming Room as well as having another room, I think located in the same building that they live in, on the opposite side of the main piazza in Vernazza to the Charming Room. We only stayed in the Charming Room and loved our stay there, you are right in the heart of what we think is the best town in Cinque Terre.
We arrived in Vernazza by train from Monterosso and had arranged to meet Giacomo down in the main piazza near the Charming Room. The walk from the train station down to the main piazza was simple and straight forward, even when travelling with suitcases. Giacomo met us as planned and took us to the Charming Room and showed us everything we needed.
The Charming Room is like a large B&B styled studio room – it has everything you need, small kitchen area, table and chairs, double bed, separate shower and toilet, safety deposit box, small internal clothes line etc. The only things possibly missing were a laundry and also internet access (and maybe a TV but then who would want to spend time watching TV when you are in Vernazza !!), however both a laundry and internet cafe are easily accessible within Vernazza itself, and only a 5 minute walk away from the Charming Room.
Giacomo and Maria are delightful hosts, Maria only speaks a little English, so most of the time we dealt with Giacomo, they are both however a charming Italian couple and most happy to help in whatever way they could.
Finally the biggest plus is its location, at ground level on one side of the piazza, right next door to the gelati shop that everyone visiting Vernazza seems to know about. It was great both early in the morning and in the evening to sit outside and just watch the locals and the general activities in the town. There are a number of restaurants in the main piazza that are all no more then a 2 minute walk from the front door of the Charming Room and all of the little shops, bakeries etc are also just as close. Walking up to the local café and getting a coffee each morning was delightful as it gave us the opportunity to see the real Vernazza.
In summary this is a simple little studio room that has everything you want, in a perfect location in a wonderful town with lovely hosts. If we go back to Vernazza then this will be the place we stay.
