We holidayed in Vernazza for four nights and stayed at Giuliano's in 2007. He upgraded us after two nights when some other guests left and his better rooms became available - I don't remember asking for it, he just offered. I haven't written before, one loses track of time and moves on but after seeing the tradgedy that has befallen Vernazza in 2011 I'm moved to offer encouragement in the hope that potential visitors will not be deterred.
Cique Terre is a beautiful part of Italy, Vernazza was our pick of the towns and Giuliano's proved to be a perfect choice of accommodation. One of the great attractions of the region is the walking trail linking the towns and a certain degree of fitness is required to enjoy it, and that same fitness serves you well in the approach to the room as there are numerous steps leading up to them. We appreciated these as part of the character and charm of the place, and usually we still had at least half of our gelatto left by the time we reached the top, so we could sit out on the terrace and enjoy the view finishing the remainder. The rooms were very comfortable and clean, Giuliano proudly explained that he had built them. The second room we stayed in had an oversized en-suite that would not have been out of place in a modern hotel. Downstairs was a compact little communal kitchen, fairly basic, no extravagant appliances but it was enough for us for a quick breakfast as we tended to eat out at some of the wonderful restaurants for dinner, or buy panine and salami and a few litres of wine for lunch on our walks. We actually tried restaurants in most of the towns and particularly enjoyed a fantastic anchovy meal at one in Monterosso.
For some, a spectacular view from a room is important. For us the specatacular views were on the walking trail and I personally appreciated the more varied outlook across the roof tops to the little harbour, the church, and the winding road up to the hilltops with those little three wheeled vehicles so common ito the area, struggling their way to the top.
Above the rooms we caugt sight of an interesting little funicular, not sure of where it went or what the driver was doing but he smiled and waved.
Overall we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, we hope that the village recovers, and that others can also enjoy the wonderful hospitable accommodation of Guiliano's rooms.
