I'm still here and felt compelled enough to come on and write this while I still have it fresh in my mind...
We stayed here because a company booked this hotel for us on a consulting trip. The small room, old furniture, uncomfortable beds, 2'x2' shower and broken TV were all things we could handle, having traveled through Europe before and gotten used to the generally less than comfortable accommodations. We even managed to deal with the flight of stairs TO THE ELEVATOR and the extra flight of stairs down to the first floor rooms once you reach the mezzanine.
There were 2 things, however, that were absolutely unacceptable:
1. The Smell.
Our room smelled from the moment we walked in. I think it may have actually gotten worse during the time we were here - maybe there's a dead rat somewhere or something. The most overwhelming smell is the mildewy/moldy carpet. You can really tell this room has had some water damage. Both my roommate and I got sick while we were here. Although surely the cold weather had something to do with it, our illnesses were exponentially compounded by the terrible stench and air in our room. An even worse smell came out of the bathroom. We have no idea where it originated from. The toilet, shower, sink and bidet all appeared to be clean and functioning. Yet, still it seemed like we had a sewer leak somewhere in the bathroom. We had to close the bathroom door any time it was unoccupied to keep it from getting so bad we couldn't stand it.
The second thing we couldn't handle was the terrible service. For example, we asked the staff for a recommendation of a local restaurant, and the front desk girl handed us a preprinted business card with the listings of two places on it. Then, she couldn't tell us what either place served or where either was located. As mentioned by some others, the hotel will give you a voucher for 30 minutes of free internet when you arrive. After that, you have to pay 5 euros for 24 hours of access (there's no other option). The first time I purchased access, the front desk didn't have change for my 20 euro bill. So, the clerk said he needed a copy of my identification and would hold it as a voucher for me to pay later. That was inconvenient, but I was ok with it. (Note: they already made a copy of my passport when I checked in.) It took the clerk about 15 minutes to try and make a copy of my driver's license, since my passport was up in my room. Eventually, he couldn't get the picture to copy well and decided instead to write down my DL number and address from the ID. He scrawled some IOU on the paper and stuck it in a drawer, then gave me my access voucher. The next day, I tried to settle my debt by paying 10 euro instead of 5 when I bought my new voucher, but the front desk clerk had no idea what I was talking about. When I finally got her to understand, she just took the money and gave me a new voucher. She never recorded my repayment of the debt - so I'm kind of expecting to get a bill when I check out in 3 hours. Earlier today, I purchased my last voucher for the week and used it to call home. Then I got kicked off the internet and tried to sign back on, only to realize that the front desk clerk had given me a free 30 minute voucher instead of the 5 euro, 24 hour one I paid for. I walked down to the front desk (of course, another clerk is there now) and told him what happened. I actually think it's the same guy who had an issue copying my driver's license. He looked at the handwritten paper records of internet voucher sales and told me that he had no record of me paying for one today. I saw what he was looking at, and I think the other clerk just recorded my information on the wrong paper and gave me the wrong voucher. Simple enough. But the guy there now refused to believe that I had actually paid. He kept saying, "are you sure you paid?" As if he couldn't figure out how anyone working at this hotel could ever make a mistake with the foolproof handwritten paper record system. I told him yes, I was sure I had paid. I even started to get a bit frustrated and told him he could count the money in his cash drawer and see how much was supposed to be in there if he wanted to. (On further consideration, I don't think there's any record of how much actually should be in there, so that probably wouldn't have helped.) Eventually, he just threw another voucher at me and said, "There, it's done." As soon as I walked back upstairs to my room, the phone rang and it was him telling me I needed to come down and give him another copy of my passport. (This will be their third copy of my identification - he can't find either of the others.) I told him sorry, but I wasn't coming down right now. I was busy packing and would give him a copy of my passport again when I checked out. He seemed not to like that, but I guess there isn't much he can do about it at this point.
I'm so ticked off that I'm not packing anyway, I'm online writing a stinkin review about this terrible place. If I had chosen my own hotel, I probably wouldn't have picked this to begin with - but if you're considering it, don't. The owner also has other locations with similar names (one is Hotel Milan down the street), so beware of those as well. I saw the Excelsior Hotel near the water several times while walking back from the bus stop and think that would be totally worth the splurge, even though I don't know how much it costs. Oh, and wear about 25 layers if you're coming to Trieste in the Winter or Spring. It's SO cold here right now, and the wind is killer.
