“Disappointing”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 October 2011

Very poor quality of facilities and service, which is disappointing given the generally reasonable quality of NH hotels elsewhere in Europe. Among the many small inefficiencies and problems, which add up to make a poor overall experience, I found the following:

- the safes in the rooms do not work
- no free power sockets (have to unplug lights and tv to plug in devices)
- old CRT TVs take up a huge amount of desk space
- wifi is a very expensive extra
- paying for wifi only allows connection of one device
- for business meetings only 35 connections can be made to wifi
- room upgrade scam to get extra money at check-in with 'free minibar' gives you access to an almost empty minibar (this is the first time that I have seen a minibar with no wine)
- paper-thin walls mean that you hear everything from your neighbours, including a toilet
adjacent to the headboard of the bed
- impossible to get to the reception desk to check out if you are part of a group.

This is also probably the only place you can get bad coffee in Trieste. This city is the centre of the world coffee trade, you can smell the stuff all around the port, and there are many cafes selling excellent coffee. This hotel contrives somehow to serve up disgusting brown liquid at breakfast and at business meetings.

Room Tip: Poor quality, not good for business, and must be better options.

“Under Suspiscion”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 October 2011

While sightseeing in Trieste, Italy we noticed that the Jolly Hotel had been converted to a NH property and we decided to go inside and have a look at the changes. No sooner were we inside that a security guard approached us and followed us closely everywhere we went and soon started muttering things and became agitated when we paid him no heed and barked out " are you guests here at the hotel". We informed him we were not and kept on looking around. soon a front desk person approached us and stared us down. A brief but curt conversation enured. We left before the police would arrive and before we could sit down at the bar for a drink and inquire about the lunch menu. this super security keeps out terrorists, ciminal elements, assorted rif raf, malcontents, troublemakers, holligans and hoodlums but also is very unwelcoming to potential customers. later we went to the Savoy Excellsior palace where we walked around the lobby, reading room, restrooms, had a drink at the bar and inquired about room rates for our next stay in Trieste. a much more welcoming approach.

Room Tip: We were not even able to see the lobby area much less any hotel room so I cannot answer this questio...

“Clean but spartan”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 May 2011

Stayed at the NH Trieste for four nights while I attended a scientific workshop. The hotel is located in the center of the older part of the city , one block from the waterfront but the view is obstructed by a hideous old, abandoned brick building. The hotel also is within easy walking distance of the city hall square (a lovely area) and a nice canal flanked by restaurants, also a lovely area and a great place to while away ones time on a warm evening.

As to the hotel itself, the rooms are spartan but clean. Hard, but to me a comfortable bed. The desks and side tables all are built-ins. Few of the amenities of a four star hotel; for example, no robes or slippers, and only a small cube of soap. As a caution to American travelers, BRING YOUR OWN WASH CLOTH. While most upscale European hotels have caught on to our national need for wash cloths, the NH still has not gotten the word. Hand and bath towels are ok.

Other reviewers have pointed out that internet access is provided but only at a cost through SwissCom. I found the service to be reasonably fast, but not inexpensive - 18 Euros (about $25 US) per 24 hour period for business-level access.

The reception area is small, clean, but again spartan with a small, and expensive bar. The desk staff is efficient, well-trained, but a bit cool. The restaurant serves a typical European buffet of scrambled eggs, bacon and sausages, cereals, fruits cheeses, sliced meats, breads, yoghurts etc. You can get your coffee from an automatic machine, or you can request fresh espresso-based coffees from the dining room staff. Sometimes they bring it, sometime they don't.

All in all, the NH would be an OK hotel for a few nights of a business trip, but I'm not sure that I would recommend it to tourists who want a nice place to relax while they visit Trieste (and Trieste is a city well worth the visit).

“Good for train/bus station, nothing else....”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 12 May 2011

The first thing we encounterd was an upsell from the receptionist, to a bigger size room. Before we could answer, she offered an additional upsell, for unlimited wi-fi. First was €10 per night, then it went up to €15 per night. This on top of our €243 for two nights.
We then found out that the wi-fi in pulic areas was for a total of 30minutes, per stay (not per day). Quite mean, as more people travel with wi-fin enabled devices.

I'd recommend the hotel ONLY for it's proximity to the train & bus stations.

“A clean, friendly hotel that is centrally located and good value.”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 November 2010

We stayed one night at the NH Trieste and had a very comfortable room with a large, modern en suite. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The reception staff were very friendly and helpful with tourist advice and arranging services. Breakfast was included and was very good.
