“A 2 nights stay should be your maximum”

Wanting to go to Parma was solely based on food (as it should be). We were on our honeymoon and though the honeymoon was a 2-week trip, we had no plans outside of Florence our arrival city and we're going to live by the moment. Decide on a whim "let's do __ today" and Parma was a destination we decided to try. We wanted to try "the best" prosciutto and parmesan cheese, who wouldn't?

Since we didn't book anything sooner, one of the only hotels open was the hotel palace maria luigia. It is definitely not a honeymoon hotel - so unless you have to stay here like us, I am not sure it's worth a honeymoon trip. Parma IS. This hotel isn't.

The hotel is average at best. I wouldn't say horrible, because the location is good and the breakfast is decent. However, the staff isn't the most friendly and the rooms are not nice. For 300euro for 2-nights, the price was quite disappointing. The room is very run down; they have no AC, and the bed is HORRID. It's 2-twins pushed together but they are at least 10+ year old mattresses. We were in room 203 and if you like you're sleep; do not stay in this room. My husband who is 6'4 and doesn't sleep well as is..had the worst night sleep of our honeymoon. The bed is too small and actually makes you lean into the middle.

Room Tip: Don't get room 203.

“Uncomfortable, noisy and shabby”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 January 2011

We were very disappointed with this hotel. The position is great - close to the station, and the centre of Parma, but that's where it ends. The rooms are poorly decorated and jaded with shabby furnishings (we were there for 9 days and had 2 small drawers and a shelf in a battered armoire). The accomodation definitely does not resemble any of the pictures on the web. We were there over the Christmas/New Year period and never once managed to sleep beyond 6am due to the staff loading trolleys of laundry into vans in the street outside. Nothing recreational about this stay!

“A special treat”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2010

I felt I compelled to write a review since I saw the negative ones of a hotel my husband and I have enjoyed during numerous stays. We have always had a lovely spacious room (we request the same room and always have been accommodated), friendly service and great buffet breakfast. Plus the hotel is so convenient to the train station or the center of Parma. This past October, we were celebrating our 30th anniversary and mentioned it to the manager. He said: You must have lunch on me to celebrate. We were completely surprised, and of course, could not refuse his kind offer! The waiters could not have been more helpful and charming. The food was outstanding from the "antipasto" (they started us off with a hunk of Parmigiano Reggiano cheese - yum!!!!) to the desserts. I would only stay at this hotel when we return to Parma.

“Overpriced and rundown - nothing like the pictures online”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 December 2010

We booked this hotel online on the fly while already on the way to Parma. We just needed a place for one night, the location seemed good and the rooms looked nice online! All I can say is "big mistake"! We should have taken the clue from the dirty rundown looking hotel facade and turn around when we got there. The "deluxe room" on the top floor, for which we paid 180 Euro, looked absolutely nothing like the pictures online, it was small, a bit smelly with a tiny bathroom, not very clean, had worn carpet and old worn furniture.

Since it was already pretty late when we got there (and the room non refundable), we decided to stick it out for the one night. The breakfast was not worth any mention except for the service, which was extremely slow and borderline rude.

To our surprise, we realized upon checkout that we were charged an additional 35 Euro for parking, even though the Front office clerk confirmed upon check in that the hotel parking fee for one night was 15 Euro. We tried to reason with them and have the charge corrected, but the hotel refused. Instead they told us (in a very obnoxious way) that it was our own fault because we had reserved the parking spot while booking the room online, and the online fee (for that very same parking space) was 35 Euro and not 15 Euro. Just ridiculous!

Well, we paid and left with the promise to ourselves to actually READ the tripadviser reviews in the future, so we won't end up at another tourist trap like this one!

On a more positive note, Parma is one of the most beautiful cities in Italy and the late dinner we had at Pizzeria Don Alfonso was incredible, grazie for that.

“Hotel Web Site Pictures Misleading”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 November 2010

We internet booked a Deluxe Room for 5 nights based upon the Web Pictures (our originally desired hotel was fully booked). The room was small, too small for the price we were paying. We stayed the night, meanwhile we checked our originally desired hotel and found out a jr. suite was available and at substantially lower price. We made arangements to move the next day. Unfortunately I did have to pay the ML a one nights cancellation penalty, that hurt. This is my way of alerting travelers to reveiw web sites with a slightly more suspecting eye than mine was.
