Not glamorous, and 20 minutes walk from the centre of town, but good value in an expensive town, clean and comfortable.

Donatello isn't fashionable by any standard - the whole interior feels to have been the same from 70s/early 80s - but apart from that, the hotel provides a completely ok stay at a very affordable price. The location is good, it takes about 10 mins by walking to the city centre and the staff is friendly as well. So I wouldn't recommend this for a romantic weekend but if you are looking for a rather cheap but still adequate stay in Modena eg. with your friends, Donatello is perfectly ok!
Although this hotel had all the amenities of a 3* hotel it looked like it had not been decorated for 100 years! The rooms smelled of smoke and was above a possibly disused mens club.
Having said this, the price was very cheap and for one night it was ok, although if we had planned to stay for any longer we probably would have moved.
I have travelled to quite a few places in my time but, the first time that the people in charge of the hotel acted like friends and could not do more for you. 2k.m. from centre of town but bus stop near-by and just 1euro into town. Bar/cafe just up the road called Big Ben, made you most welcome and a visit is a must. Given complimentary coffee before we left after a meal or if we just called in for a drink. Drinks and coffee when we told them we were leaving the next day!! Francesca, waitress was a little gem!
We needed accommodation for five nights whilst escorting our daughter to Modena to help settle her into her first week at University on an Erasmus exchange.
We looked at lots of hotels in and around Modena and picked the hotel Donatello for its location, its sits quite near to the motorway taking you to the airports Parma or Bologna, and is also situated about halfway between the student’s accommodation (Residenza Universitaria Costellazioni) and Modena town centre, it was a 10-minute walk either way.
Having hired a car from the airport it was important to be able to park your vehicle and the hotel accommodates this nicely in a free secure car park situated under the hotel.
On arrival we were greeted with a warm friendly welcome from reception, which continued throughout our stay and were always on hand with local information.
Our room was clean and tidy and represented good value for money; in fact we have stayed in 4 stars that were not as good. I would recommend you take a travel kettle if you like to make your own drinks in your room, an item we desperately missed!
Breakfast continental style was more than adequate with a variety of drinks, cereals and everything you would expect. Nothing was a problem you only had to ask.
The Hotel Donatello like Modena was a warm friendly place and we would hope to visit it again in the future.
