The best way to get to San Luca is to walk to the top of the hill under the "portico" or covered walkway starting from the Meloncello, the Baroque archway at the bottom of the hill not far from the stadium. It takes about 40 minutes to walk up all the steps and the best time in my opinion is late in the day, when the sun is going down. When you get to the top, after visiting the Basilica, that has recently undergone major restoration work, you might want to go for a pizza at the pizzeria Da Vito, just past the church. On the way down it's much easier and only takes about 20 minutes. This covered walkway is the only one of its kind in the world and quite an attraction in itself. As an act of penance it is said that in the past sinners would climb up to San Luca on their knees, at least part of the way, but I have never seen this myself, although I have lived in Bologna for many years.
