The basics of the hotel were adequate, but not exciting. The no smoking floor was a plus when booking, but the door to the bar downstairs was always open, so the placement of the no smoking floor on the 1st level up was useless with everyone smoking in the bar. The room, however, did not smell of smoke. The night spent there was sleepless. At 2am there was a car "sideshow" outside. Cars peeling out and racing down the street. At 3am screaming was heard from somewhere outside. At 4am the neighbors across the street in the apartment building were blaring music so loud I thought it was coming from my own room. The city was dreadful. We arrived at 8pm to find all of the stores and restaurants closed already. Yes, even the restaurants. The city known for good food and our choices were Mcdonald's or snacks left over from my previous travels. Walking to the two main squares seemed unsafe. We were approached by strange young men waiting in a dark alley as we turned a corner near the main square. I truley believe we would have been mugged if we didn't turn around immediately. This place felt like an inner city in America. It was nothing like the rest of Italy that we enjoyed so much. Please, don't waste your time in Bologna. (December 2004)
