“Bizarre hotel. Not even close to 4 star.”
My family (2 adults and 2 children) spent 3 1/2 weeks in Italy this past summer. We stayed in only one hotel: Albergo San Domenico in Urbino (the rest of the trip we stayed in apartments or with family). The only positive aspect was the location. But the town is not big, so staying elsewhere in town is a short walk to everything.
The lobby is strange. There are many tables with piles of magazines. There is bizarre decor. It is cramped. There is a glass display cabinet with the owner of the VIP hotels featured in books, magazines, manifestos, you name it. His face is everywhere, even in the rooms. I wish he would pay as much attention to his hotels as he does to the camera.
From a practical standpoint, you must know that there is only one person responsible for the reception and the rooms. So if you need help with something in your room, you have to wait for the reception person to come up. This became apparent upon arrival when there was nobody to take us up to the room. We did it ourselves. That's because the person must stay at the front desk. Nobody showed us how to use the room. For example, this hotel has the special card that unlocks the door and powers on the room (in another slot in the room). There were no instructions. It turned out our air conditioning was broken. That was determined after about an hour of trying and finally the front desk person came up to the room to confirm it was not working. But there were no available rooms, so we slept with the windows open. We were riddled with mosquito bites in the morning. Only with persistence on my part were we able to get our room moved. They did send someone to attempt to fix it, but were unable to. Mind you, the next day they put somebody else in the room for them to suffer as well.
The room they moved us to had working air conditioning and was a little bigger. The decor is old and dirty. The lampshades were soiled. The bathroom was austere. The bathroom products were cheap. This was supposed to be our only splurge lodging of the whole trip. Not even close.
There are many many things wrong with this hotel. Simple things like when you unlock your door with your card, the door buzzer is deafening. Thus you can hear many people on your floor entering their rooms. The room doors slam heavily if you don't watch it. Again, we were awakened often by other people's doors closing.
Sundry items: the wifi internet is really really flakey. But that does not stop them from charging you for all the time you spend trying to connect. The towels are thin.... my home towels are better. 4 star hotels should have better towels.
Upon checkout, I asked for a discount for the first night and they would only offer 10 percent. I had no energy to argue with them. I couldn't wait to get out of there. This hotel wore me out, and I only stayed 2 nights. It was truly a joke of a hotel.
