“Very good hotel for the price”

Stayed for 4 nights in October. We travelled as a group of 3 couples, the hotel check in was easy, the rooms were clean and all the balconies had a great view of St Peters which looks great at night.
The location is a little out of the way and it is 20-30 mins easy walk downhill to the Vatican. It's about 5 mins walk to the nearest bus stop and buses are fairly frequent.
The rooftop terrace is a great place to sit in the evening. The breakfasts were very good, with plenty of choice. No one of our party had any problems at all and would stay in this hotel again.

“Cardinal Hotel St Peter”

The breakfast room was always very crowded and they didn't cleaned the tables after previous people. It always took some time to find a clean table.
One night we arrived with the car late about 2 a.m. and all doors and gates of the hotel were closed and no one responded to our door call. We had to wait 15 min outside on the rain till we managed to open the gate somehow for the car to enter the parking.

“Good value but bad location...”

I chose this hotel because I thought it would be close to the main attractions (used an inaccurate website for booking unfortunately) and I was thoroughly disappointed. You either had to walk 30 minutes (to St. Peter's) or take a bus (which we didn't mind). The bus tickets were very cheap (4 euro per person) but it was a bit of a pain considering we typically like to walk while on these trips. The hotel itself was fine. The room was very clean and the staff kind for the most part. The breakfast staff weren't all that helpful. It was a hit or miss most mornings. We traveled with a baby so we needed warm milk and some employees were obliging but others were not. There were no baby chairs, so we used our stroller. They had a shuttle for 50 Euro from the airport to the hotel and that was nice. I prepaid our hotel room but upon check out I had to pay 12 Euro for city taxes which I wish had been included in my initial payment. We wouldn't stay here again if given the opportunity. We'd pay more for a better location and a more baby friendly environment.

“Not really enjoyable stay at Cardinal Hotel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 January 2012

Positive: value for money, for 3 persons we got an attractive price - quite the same price as B&B in center of Rome and that we thought for a 4 star hotel!
Negative: This is not 4 star hotel as it claims, but hardly 3 star.
On foot it is quite far away from underground metro stations (nearest metro is approx. 1 km away), and it is generally quite far away from city center. Although there are buses which stop nearby (approx 200 m from hotel) and take you to Vatican and downtown.
The staff is generally OK, but messed up with rooms. We booked a Family room, however we got a standard Double + 1 extra bed. It was obviously not what we expected. Didn't see much eagerness from staff to change the room when we pointed this out.
Except from being DBL and not Family - the room was OK, however next morning I found a horde of nasty little ants on a toilet seat, on a floor, running up my feet (!) Next day they got much fewer and after didn't see them. I suppose ants occupied the bathroom as nobody lived in the room before us for a long time.
The breakfast is filling with scrambled eggs, ham, stewed fruits, yogurts, cereals etc. However there were no fresh fruits except apples, no vegetables at all, and croissants where not croissants, but something else. It is all the same day after day, so on the second day it got boring. Anyway the breakfast could be better, but not much bad.
As we were in winter the pool was not working.

Room Tip: If you need a place to stay in Rome - have a look at B&Bs in the city center for the same price...
