If you book this "hotel" be aware that is a 3 bedroom apt, not a hotel, not even a B&B nor hostel. There is no reception, when you arrive at the location (near Termini) you have to call a phone number to have them meet you to "check" you in. Now if you're like me and travelling from the states, you can guess what this means in roaming charges from your cell phone provider. Otherwise try finding a pay phone, having the right coins, and knowing how to dial local Rome numbers. Yea. This left me and my husband stranded in the hot June sun, exhausted from having driven the entire afternoon from Naples, we stood on the curb for 3 hours. I did manage to call using my cell, but they didnt even pick up. Because its location, despite being central, it is the train station: in Europe this means shady. Lots of prostitutes and drug addicts kept walking by over the 3 hours, making you feel weary of your surroundings.
I actually check-in to a hotel (a real hotel with reception) next door, until I realized I couldn't cancel my reservation and it was already pre paid. Hence the 3 hours of desperation waiting for someone to meet us. My husband got so annoyed he rang all the neighbors doorbells and was asking people in the neighborhood, but they all just shrugged and couldn't help us further.
It's a 3 room apartment without full time reception, so you might be lucky or might just be really unlucky like myself. When the lady did finally show up, she acted like this was all normal and it was our fault for not having called. When I stated that we did call multiple times to no avail, she just shrugged and said she speaks NO ENGLISH. Now expedia says it has a multi-lingual staff, but I guess that just means Italian. She didn't even bother to apologize, she just gave us the key and told us to leave it on the desk when we leave as she would not be there for check out.
We stayed for 3 nites, and booked on Expedia for about $150 a nite. Three nites gave me enough experience to write about.
The other downside of being in an apt. is when your "roomies" happens to be a family with kids. The walls are made out of paper so it's literally not much privacy, you hear the kids fighting. You hear your drunken roomies coming in at 2AM. You hear everything.
The room itself is superficially clean. If you look into corners or under the bed, you see dust bunnies and hairballs. The bathroom we had was spacious, but there was hair on the toilet seat, I luckily had Purell and disinfected it myself to be on the safe side. The towels were skunky, they must have been left in the washer for days! They were soooo musty, when I dried myself off at showering, I wafted like the skunky towels. I was so nauseated by this, I used my 3 day used beach towel (we were at the Amalfi coast) instead of their "fresh" towels. I had the luck of running into the "receptionist" on the second day and asking her for new towels. Here's the best part: she flipped out and threw her cell phone on the table, and said everything was clean and there was no need for new towels. Ummm....ok...you don't speak enough English to simply apologize for leaving guests out on the street but you can speak enough to yell at your guests. Nice. After we left to go sightseeing in Rome, she went into our room, removed some decorations (plastic flowers on the nitestand) as if we would take these along with the skunky towels as souvenirs. I wouldn't be surprised if she went through our luggage, just out of spite.
We weren't expecting 5 star service, we werent even looking for much, but I never felt so scammed in my life. I emailed Expedia to warn them that this is not a hotel already and wanted to warn all trip advisor members out there. You're money is better spent elsewhere!
