My mother and I recently took a trip to Rome, Italy as part of a Rick Steve's Tour. As part of the tour you stay in the Sonya Suites hotel on Via Firenze. The hotel we stayed in is brand new (it is the 2nd of two buildings 1 block from each other.) We did book 1 extra day there before the tour began and they were very accomadating and provided us with a nice (but a litile small) room that we stayed in for 7 nights. They even had the room ready a little earlier than the scheduled check in time.
The rooms are very clean and comfortable. They are not large, but it is ok because you dont really spend much time in there anyway. The bathroom is clean and very modern. Each day you are provided with tolietries and very large (and some smaller ones also) towels.
Each morning there is a breakfast with cappacino, espresso, etc... pastries, rolls, meats like salami, hardboiled eggs, yogurt, cereal, fruits, and spreads. It is definitely a nice feature because meals can be expensive especially with the exchange rate. However, if you are someone into big breakfasts, this is NOT that. Although, Italians dont typically have large breakfast like we do in the states, so this is better than you will got most places.
The hotel has 2 computers with free internet access. The staff are very friendly and helpful. There is always someone on staff that speaks english. It is always polite to attempt in Italian, but the staff will go out of their way to help you and dont mind if you speak only in English.
The location is great! It is right near Via Nationale and Stazione Termini, so you are very close to some cool clothing boutiques and main transportation lines. Rome isnt a very large city so you can walk to many sites from this location. The Vatican is probably the farthest destination and i would say that it is probably an hour and a half walk (we never walked it). The metro stations are close by and easy to use. They can get you over to Vatican City in about 15 minutes. For food its an OK area. Try Ristorante Target a few blocks up for a nice dinner. Otherwise, I would venture to the Spanish Steps of Campo di' Fiore for some better food. ENJOY, its great!
