If you stay here during the low season (like us - we just got back), this place is extremely good value for money! At 225 euros, I got an entire apartment for ourselves. There are 3 or 4 other bedrooms but they are not occupied so it is really like living in a condo unit with just the two of us. They also have a fully-equipped kitchen where the only missing thing is the stove, but then again, we didn't really miss that as we don't cook during our vacation. I would love to be able to use the coffee machine though but even with instructions, it looked a bit complicated so we didn't get to try it at all :(
The room is located on the 6th floor of an apartment block, with lift serving the entire five floors and you just need to climb up a short flight of stairs up to the unit. However, the management apparently owned two apartment unit - one further down the road. We were given the address to that unit (Ottaviano 9) and went there to check in. It is rather hard to locate as this is not your normal hotel like what I mentioned, it is located within an apartment block. So you will have to look at the name plate that is located at the side beside the main door and in a tiny strip of paper, you will see 'Ancient Romance B&B' to let you know that you are the correct place. The lift in this building is also rather ancient - you have to open up the door and close it to get up then close it again after you get out or otherwise it will not go down to the ground floor. The lift is also very small - my husband couldn't get in after I went in with my huge luggage.
When we reached their main office, we were quite horrified when they told us we had to walk back to the station area as that's where our room is located, in the second unit as their main office is currently undergoing renovation. It would be better if guests are informed of this beforehand, or they should have the guests checked in at the second unit (maybe set up a temporary check-in office there?) as it is quite heavy to be lugging the luggage around (as we have already lugged it all the way here from the Rome Termini during peak hours).
Once we got here though, it was heaven. The place is quiet after around 8pm so we could open the window to let in the cold air. There is an air-conditioner but we were not given the controller. This place is only a few minutes walk to the Vatican City and Castel Sant'Angelo. The Ottaviano Metro Station is just right beside the apartment block, where we could take trains easily to the Colloseo (took us around half an hour to get there, due to the peak hour rush). It is also nearby a lot of eateries, especially pizzeria. A good pizzeria, Non Solo Restaurant, is just a couple of blocks down :)
The people who owned the place is also very friendly and he helped to print out our Vatican Museum reservation without a grouse. The place also has free wi-fi - very fast connection. So apart from the inconvenience during the first day, this place is really awesome and I have been recommending it to most of my friends who are interested to visit Italy :)
