“Great Location and Accomodations”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Ancient Romance was a great experience. The staff was very helpful in making reservations for sites and was great in their assistance. The accomodations were excellent. The mattress could have been a little softer but the food was excellent and always available. They even made cappacino for me. Would definely stay there again. The location is excellent. Right at the Vatican walls.

“Good value for money!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 December 2011

If you stay here during the low season (like us - we just got back), this place is extremely good value for money! At 225 euros, I got an entire apartment for ourselves. There are 3 or 4 other bedrooms but they are not occupied so it is really like living in a condo unit with just the two of us. They also have a fully-equipped kitchen where the only missing thing is the stove, but then again, we didn't really miss that as we don't cook during our vacation. I would love to be able to use the coffee machine though but even with instructions, it looked a bit complicated so we didn't get to try it at all :(

The room is located on the 6th floor of an apartment block, with lift serving the entire five floors and you just need to climb up a short flight of stairs up to the unit. However, the management apparently owned two apartment unit - one further down the road. We were given the address to that unit (Ottaviano 9) and went there to check in. It is rather hard to locate as this is not your normal hotel like what I mentioned, it is located within an apartment block. So you will have to look at the name plate that is located at the side beside the main door and in a tiny strip of paper, you will see 'Ancient Romance B&B' to let you know that you are the correct place. The lift in this building is also rather ancient - you have to open up the door and close it to get up then close it again after you get out or otherwise it will not go down to the ground floor. The lift is also very small - my husband couldn't get in after I went in with my huge luggage.

When we reached their main office, we were quite horrified when they told us we had to walk back to the station area as that's where our room is located, in the second unit as their main office is currently undergoing renovation. It would be better if guests are informed of this beforehand, or they should have the guests checked in at the second unit (maybe set up a temporary check-in office there?) as it is quite heavy to be lugging the luggage around (as we have already lugged it all the way here from the Rome Termini during peak hours).

Once we got here though, it was heaven. The place is quiet after around 8pm so we could open the window to let in the cold air. There is an air-conditioner but we were not given the controller. This place is only a few minutes walk to the Vatican City and Castel Sant'Angelo. The Ottaviano Metro Station is just right beside the apartment block, where we could take trains easily to the Colloseo (took us around half an hour to get there, due to the peak hour rush). It is also nearby a lot of eateries, especially pizzeria. A good pizzeria, Non Solo Restaurant, is just a couple of blocks down :)

The people who owned the place is also very friendly and he helped to print out our Vatican Museum reservation without a grouse. The place also has free wi-fi - very fast connection. So apart from the inconvenience during the first day, this place is really awesome and I have been recommending it to most of my friends who are interested to visit Italy :)

“Amazing location, but more of a bed than a bed and breakfast”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 December 2011

We stayed in this B&B for 3 nights. The location is amazing. 2 minutes to the tram in one direction, 2 minutes to the metro in the other, and 3 minutes from the Vatican.

The room was always very clean but the bed and the bathroom were disappointing. The bed was rather uncomfortable and the pillows were rock hard and incredibly thin - not great for bad backs. Perhaps worse was the bathroom. The actual room was quite clean but the water pump was amazingly loud. It woke me up several times in the night. In addition, for some reason on our second night, a smell (presumable from the drains) came into the room and were really rather unpleasant.

As for the breakfast, as several people have mentioned, it mainly consists of a cake that is left our all day and was there for all 3 days that we were there. In Rome, it's almost a shame not to have a cappuccino and a cornetto for breakfast, but the 5 - 10 euros should be added when considering the cost of this b&b.

That being said, the other rooms seemed nicer (possibly more comfortable?) and the location was great. I would probably stay again if the price was right!

Room Tip: Try not to have the room - La Dolce Vita

We are always very happy to receive reviews from all our guests, and we have always accepted any kind of suggestion in order to always improve our service, but it is sincerely very disappointing reading statements like "Breakfast mainly consists of a cake that is left our all day and was there for all 3 days that we were there", because it is absolutely not true.

Our breakfast includes: 2 kinds of cakes, 3 kinds of cereals, croissants, 3 kinds of biscuits, toasted and normal bread, fresh fruit, yogurts, fresh ham and cheese, any kind of juice, milk, jam, nutella, honey and a coffee machine always available with real ground coffee to make perfect cappuccino and espresso. Breakfast is self service.

We do not pretend that everybody likes our breakfast service, but we pretend that everybody would say the truth. Because we are working for our guests and we are always ready to receive constructive complains, because we can then know how to make things better, but sincerely not in this case.

“Great Place, great service”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 November 2011

Wow, what a great place! We stayed at this place in September 2011. Great location, walk to Vatican in 2 min. Walk to all the transportation just minutes away. Very private.
Rooms are very clean, and nice size. Service is very friendly. They take care of you at any time of the day. We lost our luggage, friendly stuff helped us to speak to airline multiple times.
Would recommend this place.

Room Tip: We traveled with a baby, and they were able to put a crib in the room. Inform them in advance,

“Location, room, management = GREAT!!!”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 October 2011

We had a really comfortable room, the staff was really nice and very helpful. The room was everything we could have asked for in a B&B, close the the Vatican (only two blocks away) and the Metro (Just outside the door!!!) ....WOW THAT WAS A HUGE BONUS! Massimo was really helpful and very friendly and having FREE WIFI was really nice. Thanks to Massimo and Michelle. Thanks for making our honeymoon great!

Would recommend and would certainly return!
