We stayed for 4 nights early July 09. This hotel was recommended by an organization which normally finds great deals. OK, it was last minute and maybe the pickings were slim but there were so many disappointments we wish we had known as it would have been worth it to pay more for a different hotel. Not even sure where to start but here goes. First all the good points...The location is FANTASTIC. The Basilica of St. Peter is literally around the corner as are the Vatican Museums. You are a max 20 minute walk from the Piazza Navona and, at the most, a 30 minute walk from the Colliseum. Castel S. Angelo is only 5 minutes away. EVERYTHING is easily accessible. You can also hop on the bus easily and there is a Metro station about a 2-3 minute walk away. If you are military, the USO is within 2-3 minutes walk. The owner, Claudio, is so very nice, happy to give directions or make recommendations. He is very friendly and speaks good English. The rooms overlook the Piazza below and are on the top floor of a 125 year old building. There is a unique elevator so you don't have to walk all the way up. Also, the rooms are air-conditioned and have marvelous new windows to shut out the street noise and light. That's pretty much where the good points end.
The "hotel" occupies just one floor of this building. It's a renovated and restored private residence turned into a hotel. The rooms are VERY small but clean. I mean I literally bumped my head into the wall when I turned over in the night. There may be only about 6 rooms so even though we asked for a larger room, the others were either booked or as we were told, "you only paid half price". Half price for less than half a room. The rooms were cleaned everyday. There is a small refrigerator which didn't work correctly or consistently. We were there from Thurs evening until Monday morning. There are no clean towels over the weekend. In fact, the surly weekend attendant (& by the way, there is no one on attendance much of the time) told us that since we paid half price we didn't "qualify" (my word, not his but essentially that's the translation) for clean towels every day. Also we didn't 'get' extra pillows. ALSO, and very important to know, esp if you are an American tourist, there is very little, IF ANY, hot water in the summer. We were told, only get ample hot water in Jan and Feb. So you get COLD, and I mean COLD, showers. The booking agent told us that breakfast was included. Translation = you get a voucher for an Italian breakfast consisting of your choice of one beverage, one juice, and one pastry. PLUS you have to go around the corner to a bar! Ok, that part was not so terrible except that we wish we had known that was all it was AHEAD of time. AND, the bar wasn't even open when we went over on Sunday morning even though we were told it would be. The good news is that if you plan ahead and want a more substantial breakfast, there is a terrific enclosed Farmer's Market within about a 2-3 minute walk. We loaded up with fruits every day and put them in the refrigerator to eat for breakfast which hanging out the window watching the people on the Piazza below. Oh, yeah, good luck figuring out how the TV/Satellite works. You're gonna love seeing all the call 1-900 numbers for phone sex!! LOL and from cultures you couldn't have imagined. That was fun looking at for about 5 minutes! There is no phone in your room and no internet service. The signs on the walls about breakfast are not accurate. There are many "don't do" rules posted in the rooms, you know like no ironing, no meals in your room...
Could only recommend this to a single traveler who didn't intend to spend much if any time in the room. We didn't and not just because we wanted to be out and about in Roma all day and all night. Forget taking kids there or a significant other. Spend the additional Euros for a different hotel.
