“EXCELLENT, stayed in 2004 too”

Exellent, rooms were plenty big enough (we had 3 in our room), plenty of room in bathroom, tho sparce by American standards, couldn't get over how spotless not only our rooms were but the entire hotel, same as before. Perfect location, very safe, had elevator, great breakfast, served by the nuns. Wonderful pretty chapel on 3rd floor as well. No complaints, would definately recommend and plan to stay here again when I'm Rome.

“Basic, spotless, quiet”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 October 2010

The rooms in Madre Pie are, as other reviewers have said, very basic but spotlessly clean. Everywhere is tiled and the whole house is reasonably quiet. The breakfast is more than adequate and because the house is in a neighbourhood location there are various places to eat and have coffee at reasonable prices. The people at the desk were courteous and helpful at all times.
Proximity to the Vatican is a bonus for those who want to spend time at the museums and in St Peter's. Many of the sightseeing buses of course stop in the area and the underground is about 15 minutes walk away.
Yes, we did have to pay up front, but then there are not any additional costs to be paid because there is no mini bar and drinks from the bar are paid for at the time of purchase. The said bar is not terribly comfortable, but provides a space to relax as does the terrace outside.
I would have no hesitation in recommending this place to friends who want somewhere to lay their heads after a day of sightseeing in Rome.

“Good location but basic rooms, not cheap, and inflexible staff”

A few of us travelled to Rome for meetings with the Holy See. The location is excellnt but the tiny rooms are spartan and for Eur85 for single rooms you would expect more especially with the many special offers available from hotels now. We reserved rooms back in August and only finalised details a week before arrival, with the result that we were effectively "fined" over 300 euro for cancellation feees, and this, although we stayed some 14 bed nights between us. Also, you have to pay in full on arrival which means that you have no comeback if there are problems. In all, they need to modernise their business model and customer relations. THey dont realise that things have got much more competitive.

“Spotlessly clean accommodation in perfect location for St. Peters”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 October 2010

For anyone wanting to be a 5 minute walk from St. Peters, this is the place to stay. It is also near restaurants, an ATM and a pharmacy. It has a garden, which in a city is a major plus. It is secure, none of my group of 26 lost any belongings while there. The reception staff are vigilant about who comes in, and only people with room keys are let upstairs. The outside gate is shut at night and you have to ring the bell to be let in. One night we saw very suspicious people trying to get in - they did not succeed. A room safe cost us €5 for our stay of 5 nights. The whole building is incredibly clean. The continental breakfast consists of toast, croissants, rolls, jam, cold meat and cheese. The coffee was excellent. As in mainland Europe in general, the tea was not up to Irish standards.

The rooms are basic, but are ensuite with decent water pressure and towels changed daily. There is plenty of hanging space for clothes. No TV, but why would you go to Rome to spend your evenings looking at TV?

The Residenza is run by Peruvian nuns. There is a chapel for prayer and reflection, and a crucifix on the wall in the bedrooms. The Residenza would therefore not suit those who would be offended by its obviously Roman Catholic ethos, but would they want to stay beside St. Peters anyway?

There is a bus into the city centre - the 64 - watch your bags on this bus.

“Wonderful hotel with excellent service and near St. Peter's Basilica”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 May 2010

My wife and I stayed in the Residenza over Easter week( April 30-May 5). The hotel is operated by the sisters of Madri Pie. The religious order runs missions in Peru and proceeds from the hotel go toward their mission. A very nice European-style breakfast is served by the sisters and includes fresh fruit, cold cereals, fresh rolls and bread, pastries, yogurts, meats (salami, ham) and cheese. The hotel is very clean and beautiful and is adorned with religious art. There is a chapel for peaceful reflection and a beautiful terrace and garden for relaxing. The staff are very professional, knowledgeable and helpful. There are several nice small restaurants, gelaterie and pasticcerie nearby. The hotel is only 2 blocks from St. Peter's Square and is an excellent choice for religious pilgrimages and church groups that would like to be where the action is.

WiFi is not available in the rooms, but guests may use a computer in the lobby supplied with internet for a fee (5 Euro per hour). There are a couple of nearby cafes that have "free" WiFi for customers (what better way to surf than with a caffe and cornetto?). There are no TVs in the rooms, but there is a lounge and bar with a TV for public viewing. Rooms are simple but extremely clean. But let's face it, if you can't find anything better to do in Rome than watch TV, you shouldn't be in Rome in the first place.

Overall Residenza Madri Pie is an excellent place to stay for the value, comfort and convenient location. We highly reccomend it.
