“Great Location but would never stay again”

Great location, close to shops and train station, good access to attractions. Owner was rude and slept right outside the bedroom door on the couch with his dog watching TV late at night very loud. He also went out without telling us and locked us out of the building without warning us on a few occasions. Room wasn't cleaned at all during our stay, but was clean to start with.

“Can't beat the price for central Rome”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 November 2008

We stayed here to be near the train station. It is walkable in 15 minutes even with large backpacks.

It was a little hard to find but was only 90 euros for a double. The owner speaks Spanish, Italian, and a little bit of English. The dog is very friendly.

Our bedroom was very small and the window looked out to a parking lot. The bathroom was very clean but the hot water runs out quickly. There is a breakfast but we had to leave early to catch a 6:50 am train so we didn't see it.

“The Good & the Bad”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 January 2008

My challenge was to find a cheap, clean place to stay with some charm in Rome, so I gambled on LaPlata.
The good: Seems to be a new B&B in an apartment building that is undergoing renovation, so linens, furniture, etc. were up to date. The building is undergoing contractor work as others have noted, so there is some dust, scaffold in the lobby. The owner lives in an adjoining unit (I think), you are buzzed in when you come and go; didn't experience any problem with getting into the building as others did. Very comfortable clean single for 80E: firm bed, nice bathroom (the largest I had in my visit in Italy). No problem staying near Termini - it is certainly not an upscale neighborhood, more middle class, but it is very safe, central, and convenient for the subway, Leonardo Express, and buses. FYI: If you are staying near Termini a place west of Termini (like this one) is a bit more convenient than places east of Termini (and farther away from the centro storico). Quieter at night than the more touristy areas, and no problem with noise from other guests or other apartments. Variety of guidebooks (in English) and umbrellas at the desk to borrow, a nice touch. The owner is friendly and seemed helpful, though his English was about as good as my Italian so I would not expect concierge-level services. Owner's dog hangs out in the lobby, which I enjoyed - but then I am a softy for pets. Decent breakfast served in room. Booked my room through Venere.
The bad: 1) while the rooms are smoke-free and it claims to be a smoke-free property, the owner chain smokes at the front desk and the smell permeates the property. Maybe not a big point, I hate the smell and just would appreciate if he would be up front about it. 2) the site claims in-room phones, which was technically true - the room did have a phone, it just wasn't connected. Which was problem since I took the advice to use phone cards to call from my room and left my cell at home. Again, just be upfront if you don't have phone service yet.
Overall: A decent budget choice in a good location. Not a good choice if you dislike cigarette smoke or want a lot in the way of hotel/concierge services. Would stay there again if the place went smoke free; if not, think I'd look around a bit.

“Did not like this place”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 1 December 2007

I usually rely heavily on TA reviews for booking lodging, but this time around I thought I might be one of the first ones to find a gem.
Well, I totally regret going to La Plata which had only 2 TA reviews at the time, but I hope my review will be helpful to those who might be considering this place.

I saw La Plata on Venere website which had good reviews from both Americans and Europeans. I usually book directly with the place, but when I emailed the B&B, the owner quoted rates higher than rates offered by Venere, so I booked with Venere.

La Plata is on the fourth floor of a building shared by residents and offices. When we arrived and rang the door bell, there was no answer.
My husband and I waited for about 10 minutes, but got into the building when someone else was going in. When we found La Plata, the door to the "reception" room was open and there were keys in the doors
to certain rooms. I assumed that the doors with the keys were empty and went into use the bathroom, but they were occupied rooms. When I came out, the owner, Riccardo, had arrived, but I didn't feel very secure knowing that the owner left the place open to access. We had to
leave our room key with the owner whenever we went out, and there was no way to get into the building other than buzzed in. There were two other times during our 4 day stay when the owner wasn't in, so we had to wait till someone went in or came out.

We stayed in room #2 which was spacious, clean and had a nice bathroom
at the first glance. It faced the Piazza, and we could hear the traffic with the windows closed, so we used earplugs at night. Strange things happened with the bathroom when we started using it. Whenever we would turn on the hot water, very loud gushing sound was heard in the room. It was kinda annoying. Also when we turned on the bathroom fan, cigarette smoke came in. We think the fan was connected to the "reception" room where the owner chain-smoked. one more thing.
The shower base set about a foot higher than the bathroom floor, and it was a little scary stepping down to a slippery tiled floor thru a narrow shower door.

The most annoying thing about La Plata was the fact that the reception
room was always smoke-filled. Our room was connected to the reception room, and we could smell the smoke although there was a big no smoking
sign on the door. We had to put towels at the bottom of the door and air the room out whenever we came back into the room. The door was pretty thin so we could hear the TV and the dog in the reception room at night.

As you can tell from this long review, I didn't like La Plata. I do not recommend this place.

“left us out in the street with no where to go”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2007

We book our reservation several weeks in advance and left a credit card as a deposit. We received a confirmation number from the hotel. When we arrived at 4PM on the arranged day we not only found that they gave our room away but we were left out in the street with no where to go. The innkeeper was incredibly incredibly rude. He offered no explanation and no apologizes. We spent the rest of the evening walking the streets looking for a place to sleep! So much for our 1 day romantic trip to Rome!!
