Stayed here in the summer of 2005--close to train station, which on the surface seemed like a good thing but ended up not being all positive (felt like a questionable area, moreso at night). Staff seemed really welcoming and friendly at first...until they scolded us for using OLD towels as bathmats (the floors would get soaked during a shower and it was the only way to keep from slipping on the way out)...then my friend was leaving a day or two before us and her hostel would not hold her suitcase for her until her train departed, so I offered to keep it in my room for her...got scolded even more for that, as one of the employees told us that "this is not a storage facility, who do we think we are" or something along those lines...I didn't know that it was against the rules to have an extra suitcase in a room that you're paying for, regardless of who the suitcase belongs to?...It seemed from then on that all of the staff frowned upon us until we left, which ended up being the biggest relief of our stay. This place pretty much put a damper on our whole Rome experience.
