“superior location takes its toll”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 February 2012

We held a surprise gathering for a dear friend - and took 9 rooms. The staff were extremely friendly - and helped us prepare for the surprise. We spend a great long weekend in Roma (pay the Roman's some respect and call it Roma, not Rome...). The hotel was indeed comfortable and cozy- but the highlight was its location: Via Giulia is a real gem with the original dark stones still in place since 1508 and some houses from the same period still exist. The Hotel is in walking distance from the Piazza Navona and the Pantheon - and therefore all the cool places within the narrow streets - all the way to the delicious restaurants in the Jewish Ghetto. The hotel is also near the river, and upon 10 min. walk and across the river is the Trastevere with very lively scene.

But location takes its toll... Via Giulia is very close to the river and at any hour you could detect if the 130 Kph that just passed was a Moto Guzzi or a Ducati and you can hear every bus or fiat that passes. We were on the 4h floor, and every time we opened the one of the big windows, fresh air came in with lots of noise.

Breakfast was good, though surprisingly for Roma - the coffee was made from an automatic machine, so we skipped the coffee there and went a block up via Giulia to a local coffee- that really takes pride of their wonderful coffee.

Don't expect a real GYM when you go down to get rid of some pasta calories or a hang-over, though the warm big whirlpool is nice during the winter evenings.

One Caveat - at the price we paid, you'd expect the entertainment at the room: TV Channels, Music, Movies - to come free or at a very low price. But they charge you like hell for every little song you play. Good thing they have working free Wifi internet - so when needed we went on watching Craig Ferguson on youtube on the iPad

They say that the quality of your domicile in Roma is based mainly on how far you are from the local farmer's market. Hotel St. George is located a short 5 min walk from the lovely Campo di Fiori market - open every day and delicious!

Room Tip: top floor facing the front of the hotel

Dear Yaron G

Thank you for taking the time and trouble to write to us regarding your stay at the St.George Hotel,

Although we note that in general you enjoyed your stay at St George Roma.I do appreciate.

The St George Roma is located in a 15th century building, in a strategical position between Vatican City and Navona square... and also located near the Lungotevere, street that in some hours of the day was very high traffic.

For this reason all of our rooms have sound proof windows.

I want also to thank you for you good review regarding our breakfast, just note that the automatic machine located on the buffet it's only for american coffee.

Since the machine that we use in order to prepare a good espresso or cappuccino (the same machine that you will find in all italian bars) , it's located on the bar back office, we serve capuccino or espresso upon request.

I sincerely hope you will give us another chance in the future, so that we can restore your faith in our hotel,

Your sincerely

“Not bad but not five star”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 February 2012

Great location, our room was good size and they threw in a bottle of wine as we were celebrating our first wedding anniversary .......bathroom was fine for my needs though the wife would have liked a bath rather than just (large) shower. They could and should make slightly more effort with the outside entrance- we thought initially our taxi driver had brought us to his family home! Their are no cabs waiting outside and so a reasonable walk along cobbled (and therefore not ideal for the elderly or women in heels) streets is the only option.....but when in Rome walk! (just look out for the pickpockets of which many including us have a story to tell)
Main complaint relates to the roof top bar- which looks fantastic on the website and at which we were hoping to kickstart the aforementioned anniversary celebrations......on making our way there on the Saturday evening we discovered it was closed for a private function and as it is always closed on Sunday's we had to forgo what should have been a memorable experience....quite why nobody at check in or concierge services bothered mentioning this is beyond us. This I think was the biggest disappointment of all.
Breakfast was good and served on a lovely terrace with water feature and quirky little bird.

Room Tip: Not for the infirm or those with young children......if you want to try the roof top bar, best check...

Dear Guest Andy O,

On behalf of the St George Hotel Roma I would like to thank you for taking the time to share your comments on your stay with us back in September 2011.

We are glad to hear that in general your experience regarding the room and the service received was good and we really hope you will visit us again in the future. With regards to the Roof Top Lounge Bar & Restaurant we are really sorry to learn that you were not able to celebrate your anniversary there due to a private event taking plave over the same date. However, when private events happen on the roof top, we always set up our lovely garden so that guests can still enjoy al fresco dining or drinks.

With reference to the shower experience, we would love to have bathtubs in all our rooms but unfortunately the hotel is housed by a listed buidling and, even though it was totally refurbished, the size of the rooms and the walls could not be touched or changed.

As far as taxis are concerned, the best and sometimes the only way to find one is to call the dedicated numbers. Our Reception staff is always at guests’ disposal to call a taxi.

We do apologize for somehow having disappointed your expectations and we do hope we will have the opportunity to welcoming you again soon and restoring your faith in our hotel.

“Lovely stay”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 31 January 2012

We have just returned from a weekend in this Hotel and really enjoyed our stay. Location excellent and room very comfortable, staff very helpful and courteous. Good choice of food at breakfast although we found the hot food to be cold and therefore not very appetising. Overall a lovely boutique Hotel with excellent attention to detail.

“Brilliant”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 30 January 2012

Stayed at this hotel 3 times in the last 5 years and its an Oasis of calm amongst the hustle and bustle of Rome. This is a lovely boutique hotel so its not the big grand multi room hotels you find elsewhere in Rome, but thats the beauty of it, it perfectly located down a quiet street just off the main drag but close to all the squares and sightseeing, the hotels restaurant Sofia is just amazing the food is defo Michelin star quality. The ambience is chic and unassuming. We stayed in a double room with balcony, i think there are only 2 double rooms with baclonies out of the 8 that have a balcony the rest are suites, but the doubles are cheaper and not that much smaller than the suites. the spa area in the basement is great for relaxing after a day around the city, yes its small and intimate but thats the beauty of this small hotel, its never overun by the hoads and masses that frequent the other larger hotels but hey every one to their own. ask reception to recommend and reserve you tables at restaurants but defo try Sofia

Room Tip: go for a double with balcony

“The place to stay in Rome !!!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 January 2012

Stayed in this hotel last August and we were treated like royalty from the minute we arrived to the minute we left. Rooms well appointed, alhtough a bit on the small side (as with all rooms on Rome). Food in the restaruant was excellent and service second to none. It was my wifes 40th birthday during our stay and Hotel left a present on her pillow on the day of her birthday. Dont know how they knew it was her birthday as we never mentioned it - assume they got the info from her pasport. cannot comlment the hotel highly enough - Excellent!!!
