“Two holidays rolled into one, an absolutely amazing experience!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

I initially booked a swish hotel in the heart of Rome but was undecided about it as the weather is quite nice in September and it occurred to me that we may want some outdoor space if the weather lived up to expectations. Thank god I took that into account, because the week we stayed at Torretta it was circa 25-28C every day!
We arranged for Ottavio’s driver to meet us at the airport which worked out well. He was there on time and had a card with my name on.
When we arrived at the property we were spellbound as it was beaming sunshine across beautiful grounds with different properties, olive groves, and the tower with amazing lawns on either side, and a huge 40ft by 10ft pool!
Ottavio showed us around and told us about the history of the estate. We later discovered that his father is one of the most respected and famous noblemen in Rome, but we wouldn’t have known this other than being informed; Ottavio is a very friendly and down to earth gentleman and he made us feel at ease and completely at home.
The estate is full of wildlife, we took apples and carrots to the donkeys several times and they were really friendly. There are lots of interesting birds including parrots that fly around all the time as well as lizards, bats, huge toads and of course Skipper, Ottavio’s absolutely fantastic little Jack Russell! Ottavio had to drag him away from us because we were fussing over him and petting him and he was happy to be around.
The estate is located five minutes walk from a decent sized supermarket and ten minutes maximum from a bus stop where you can catch the 881 (I think) directly into Rome. The bus is extremely regular; we were quite surprised by the convenience of the service. There is a little bar next to where you catch the bus and they serve hot and cold snacks and drinks and of course ice cream!
We had dinner one night with Ottavio and all of his friends, sitting outside at a candlelit table eating homemade pasta and drinking prosceco. What a fabulous experience and something that really added a special feeling to our holiday.
Coming back to such a beautiful location after a hectic day in Rome was amazing. Having said that we also found it difficult to get motivated to get ready to head out because we were enjoying lounging in the sun and having a dip!
The tower is rustic and the furnishings are basic, but it is sufficiently equipped and also has loungers and a barbecue to make the most of the lovely outdoor space.
It was a difficult decision regarding where to stay for our week long holiday in Rome but I am delighted that I took a slight gamble by choosing to stay at Torretta Massimi with Ottavio and Skipper. This was an authentic Roman experience and unforgettable.

“A tranquil oasis within easy reach of the centre of Rome”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 July 2011

The tower's grounds were the highlight of our holiday - there were woods to wander in and a (very chilly in April) swimming pool for the children to splash in. (Beware - the pool is very deep with no shallow end.) We were able to pick grapefruit for breakfast, and the smell of orange blossom scented the air.
One long, uncomfortable bus journey later we were at St. Peters. The contrast between the noisy city and the tower's nature reserve location made this a very interesting holiday, and it was fantastic having such a large garden for the children to play in after a day's sightseeing. The biggest dilemma each day was deciding whether we wanted to go into the city at all or stay at home for the day.
The tower is near to a big estate of tower blocks, which means that security has been taken seriously - although the tower's own grounds are very rural the surroundings are not.

The owner was the most hospitable helpful host you could wish for, who spoke good English and for whom no question or request was too much trouble.

The tower itself was furnished with quiet understatement - nothing was poor quality but it was not opulent and we didn't have to worry about the children damaging things. The one area where we would have appreciated more was in the kitchen, where there were not many saucepans or bowls and no kettle. Apart from that we had everything we needed or wanted.

As each room was on a different floor it did mean there were a lot of stairs to climb up and down, so it would not be suitable for anyone with mobility or fitness problems. In particular, the internal staircase from the ground floor is an extremely narrow spiral staircase - but there is an alternative external staircase.

We were woken by birdsong and each evening we watched the bats swooping round the grounds and over the pool.

I would highly recommend this location to anyone who wants to visit Rome but does not fancy an inner city location or wants a big garden, or to a group where some members want to sightsee and others want space to play outdoors.

“Toretta is a relaxing, beautiful jewel in the mist of a crazy, hectic city.”

The best part about Toretta, is following a long, hot day of being a tourist, you return to a real home to jump in your private pool and sip cocktails in an ancient medieval tower. On the way back from the Center, we got off one bus stop prior to pick up Rome's best delicacies - salami, parmesan and Prosecco and lived like a true Roman. You simply are unable to do this in a hotel. Toretta is an ideal location for day trips, as there is plenty of parking on the gorgeous farm and highways are all nearby. Where else can you wake up to sounds of donkeys in Rome? This is the perfect place for the traveler who likes the option of cooking their own food, having parties, likes their privacy and wants to chill out after a hectic day in the city. This is the perfect place for kids as well as honeymooners.

“A fabulous break in an unusual tower away from the busy city”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 April 2011

A great place to stay offering peace and tranquility with the benefit of a pool, ideal after a long day walking around the city. The transfer to the city centre by bus is very easy and the local supermarket provides everything you need. The owner is charming and very helpful.
