“No-frills, clean, but be warned: they lie about their credit card machine.”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 September 2010

This hotel was perfect for my needs: a no-frills overnighter close to the Termini station in order to catch the train for a *very* early flight out of the Rome Fiumicino Airport. The room was clean and moderately spacious; the water pressure was excellent; I felt that my belongings were secure for the day while I meandered around the city for a few hours. However, I would not recommend this hotel for a longer stay in Rome. Being so close to the Termini means it's loud at night - even with the courtyard that did an excellent job of blocking out much of the noise. The streets around the Termini are crowded, noisy, packed with vendors and other characters who want to part you from your money - both legally and otherwise. Even just a few blocks away makes a huge difference.

I was informed upon check-in that I needed to pay in cash, even though I had confirmed my reservation online with a credit card. The desk clerk said that the credit card machine was broken; when I told them that they had my credit card information on file and could just charge me once their machine was working again, I was told "No, this is not possible." I had time to go to an ATM machine, but it was an inconvenience I would have rather forgone. Other than that, the service was fine.

Romantic getaway? Not even close. But serviceable, for sure.

***NOTE: after reading other reviews on TripAdvisor and Venere.com, I discovered that they've had a "broken credit card machine" since at least 2007. I've changed my mind and would not recommend this hotel to anyone, even someone just staying overnight, based upon this piece of evidence. Hotel Chicago: either start accepting credit cards, or stop accepting online reservations. Misrepresentation through lying is both unethical and distasteful. You won't see my business again.

“Cheap and clean”

Rooms very clean and well furnished. Staff friendly. Very convenient location, though not nice. Only problem, shortage of warm water.

“Polite staff, with good English.”

Very clean rooms
Comfortable size
Sufficient breakfast
Convinient location
Small breakfast area. Sufficient during our stay 10th-14th of Jan 2009. Winter is a good time to visit if you don't mind rain and short daylight hours. 8-4:30. The one complaint is the room safe which is tempermental and never opens on the first go. Heating is great, with heated floors.
The only thing missing is Internet. To make the stay more comfortable the pillows and mattress could be better.

“Ok. Good Location”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 September 2009

Close to the train station. and cheap. Beware AC is NOT included and costs $10 EURO extra per night. Hard mattress. Staff was friendly however, I wouldn't rely on them for a wakeup call because they sleep in a cot in the main room, therefore bring a cell phone or alarm!

“Hotel avoids Credit Cards - Why?”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 February 2008

If you want to stay at Hotel Chicago, Rome, please try any other hotel.
We had just one day to stay in Rome and wanted to make it the most productive. Though we did not expect any luxury for the price, several things are unacceptable at any price. Our Internet reservation was for two double-bed rooms – upon arrival both had a single matrimonial bed. That was solved quite quickly, and the rooms were surprisingly clean. I asked to be woken up at seven (a service provided according to the room menu): On the first morning they simply forgot to ring, we woke up at nine to the shouting of some other angry hotel guest, almost lost the chance to check out the pathetic “continental breakfast”, served at the reception (with room for only six people at a time, no plates, and a limited number of mugs – ask for another coffee before you finish the first one and see for yourself!). After breakfast the attendant informed us that we “should have been informed the previous night” that the creditcard machine was broken – and we would have to pay cash (Checking the site http://www.trav.com/wri-7031/HotelChicagoRoma/Reviews you can see this problem is chronical, at least since april 2007, so there seems to be no interest in solving it – WHY?). I repeated the request to be woken up at seven the following morning, and this time they rang at 6AM! This was my first time in Italian Hotels, so I sincerely hope that not all are like this.

  • Liked — Cleanliness of room and bathrooms
  • Disliked — Does not accept credit card though lies otherwise on internet for almost a year.
