“Disappointed”

We stayed two nights at the Chaplin. Our accommodation was not bad in some respects. We faced a quiet courtyard. Our bed was comfortable and the sheets were clean. Rene was helpful in giving us advice. It was cheap at only 55 Euros per night. Beyond those good things, there is not too much we can say that is positive. Doors creaked very loudly and broken tiles clattered. The floors did not appear clean and felt gritty underfoot. The shared bathroom was tiny and had a dirty bathmat which one had to cross to reach the toilet and basin. There was insufficient bedding and we had to search for more because we were so cold. A creepy crawly critter crept out from between the teabags, so I was suspicious of what might have been lurking in the breakfast cereal (which I declined). When friends showed us their lovely, quiet accommodation in a desirable area which only cost then 68 Euros, we felt we would have rather paid more and had what they had.

  • Liked — It was near Roma Termini train station so did not need a taxi
  • Disliked — Not clean

“Chaplin a home away from home”

We are 6 friends who recently enjoyed a 5-night stay at the Chaplin B&B, and would thoroughly recommend it to others. We chose this hotel as we need to be within walking distance from all the attractions and Termini Station, and this certainly fitted the bill. There are 3 generously sized clean rooms each with their own key and with 2-3 single comfortable beds. Two of the rooms have balconies, with floor to ceiling double-glazed doors and shutters, so that the traffic noise is largely eliminated when windows are closed. Rooms are cleaned, and towels changed, daily. There is also a dining room, library of useful books, and access to crockery and cutlery. Breakfast consists of various juices, fresh rolls, jams and other spreads, teas and coffee. We were able to make our own tea and coffee at any time, and had use of the refrigerator, so we often ate in as well as out, saving us money. Local internet cafes, supermarkets, laundrettes etc are literally a minute or two away.
The biggest asset is Rene himself, who was extremely helpful, advised us on how to get to attractions, checked opening hours for us, booked attractions, and went out of his way to help us when one of us was robbed of her backpack, containing everything! It was fantastic to be able to call him and have him talk to police etc for us.
There is only one bathroom which is smallish, so if you only need one room and are not happy at sharing bathrooms with strangers, this hotel may not be for you. In our case we booked all the rooms, so we used it as one complete apartment.
I would thoroughly recommend this hotel to anyone wanting a secure, clean and budget hotel close to the station and attractions. You will be assured of a big welcome and a home away from home.

  • Liked — Location, cleanliness, security, friendliness and helpfulness of Rene, tea and coffee making, refrigerator
  • Disliked — Only one bathroom without separate toilet

“Rene was friendly, until I had to cancel”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 September 2007

I booked a room for 4 night several months ago. Due to a last minute family illness I had to cancel my trip to Rome entirely. I emailed Rene a week in advance to cancel, told him what happened, apologized, and said I would love to stay with him in the future. He did not email back a confirmation of the cancellation. When I requested one, he got snotty.

He said he was glad I wanted to stay with him in the future, but that he would be fully booked when I tried to make the reservation i.e. he would not accept a reservation from me.

I understand that he has a small operation, but my cancellation was well outside the 48 hours he said he required. There was no need for a rude.

“Chaplin B&B Hostel Rome is Absolutely Fantastic! 100% TOP MARKS!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 14 August 2007

I first stayed at Chaplin B & B Hostel in October 2006, and this is my fourth stay. It is by far the best accommodation I have had worldwide. I have stayed at many Hostels, B & Bs, and Pensions around the world, and Chaplin B & B receives top marks!

The manager, who speaks nine languages, goes out of his way to ensure his guests are comfortable and all reasonable requirements are met. The facilities are excellent, and the rooms offer all that the traveller may need. The breakfast is far superior to any I have experienced.

Chaplin B & B is in an excellent location as it is close to Roma Termini, and within walking distances of many of Rome's famous buildings, Churches and sites.

I return to Chaplin B & B in September, and know I will be sad to leave as this will be my last stay for the year. For me, it is like a home away from home.

  • Liked — The accommodation is excellent, the atmosphere is fantastic and its location as it is within walking distance of most of the famous sites, and churches-
  • Disliked — There is nothing I disliked!

“A Big No No!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 9 August 2007

I stayed at chaplin for 1 day in JUNE,2007..The stay was just not great at all!
All the room has is one bed, chair, table and a almira..
Froget about AC,cooler or anything, there's not even a fan here!..
Just One big window..
The bathrooms cramped...
Stay here only if you have no other place to stay in Rome!Or staying near to termini is of utmost importance to you!
