“'Fantastic little gem'”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 March 2011

This little B&B is well situated, near the Colleseum, from the airport we decided to take a shuttle that would take us directly to the B&B since the price was not all that different than taking the train, we appreciated that. I would suggest this to anyone that is planning on going to this B&B. Our welcoming was really nice, they made us feel right at home from the start. The B&B is quite small, tucked away in a private courtyard like many hotels in Europe. We had the room behind the secretary erea. When we got into the room I was amazed at how pretty and original the room was, now keep in mind this is a B&B and not the Ritzs. All sorts of coffee and water is free of charge, umbrella's and bikes. The erea is safe to walk at all times of the day. You may also purchase site tickets directly from them.

OK..so now for the breakfast part! Also, keep in mind that this is Europe..Yes, you must go out of the B&B to a local little place for breakfast. For me, I thought it was ok..u had fantastic coffee, you could have a croissant or a sandwich, I had both and enjoyed them both. This is not your typical ham, eggs place...and in fact in Italy you will NOT find that anyway. If you are looking for something that they do not have than this is not your place to go too.

The bed: a little hard, beds are very personnel from one person to the next..for me I did not sleep all that well, I read that some other ppl loved the bed..this is a personnel thing.
The room was very clean, towels were changed everyday..the shower was great..lots of hot water, we also had a private courtyard with a table, chairs, plants.

Our last night we wanted to eat localy, wow....the service that I received by the 2 gentleman that were there was amazing! They went out of their way to give us different options as to where to eat, and they were spot on..

I would go back in a heartbeat...

“Almost perfect accommodation”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2010

The San Jouan is very easy to find, just a few hundred yards from the metro. Many parts of Rome are not served by the metro so this was a bonus. The area is quiet, authentic and non touristy, but within easy walking distance of the Colosseum. The guest house itself is entered by way of a pleasant courtyard and the standard of the room was high in terms of size, cleanliness, decor and facilities, especially bearing in mind the low cost we secured. The staff could not have been more helpful and recommended local restaurants that were reasonable and frequented by locals. There are tea/coffee making facilities and free use of the computer. Breakfast is taken in a very nice local cafe. Overall, this was well above the standard that would be expected in a major city. Nothing is perfect, and there was one drawback - the smell coming from the drains in the bathroom, which would doubtless be even worse in hot weather if not fixed. This only seemed to be a problem in room 1. Apart from that, the San Jouan is highly recommended.

“Wonderful staff”

San Jouan Guest House is a very nice B&B close to Colloseo. The staff was extremely helpful and the service was perfect. Very, very clean, free water, coffee and Wifi, big rooms (a window would have been nice, though) and very safe. We will be back, for sure!

“A real insight into a great area!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 December 2009

We stayed here after reading some of the reviews here and were not let down. Excellent emails from the staff with great maps making getting there very easy. You enter through an iron gate and we thought we were going into normal apartments - a real suprise to find a little oasis tucked away! Really quiet, we stayed in the larger room at the back and nerv heard a thing!!!! The bathroom was excellent - with GREAT shower and the bed was the most comfortable I have slept on.
The staff were really helpful and friendly - we bought our BIT tickets from them and loved getting the bus around so we could see the area and sights.
We were given the tickets for breakfast, and this made us feel that we were part of the area!!! The staff in the bar were friendly and the breakfast great - we could have basically what ever we wanted!
We walked to the Coliseum, about 10 minutes away down a great street with excellent LOCAL resturants and bars! Had the best pasta & pizza, washed down with jugs of wine for only 30 Euros!!! There were a few local bars too that were friendly and great value.
All in all - I would HIGHLY recommend this area and hotel for people that want to get stuck in. No, you are not right next to the Trevi fountain, but the area was colourful and you get to see a real slice of life in Rome!

“A wonderful place to stay-wonderful staff who pay attention to details”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 November 2009

This B&B is the exception to the usual substandard places one often encounters in the cities of Europe. The entry is through a standard apartment type of door/driveway that fools you into thinking that the inside will be as bland. Nothing could be farther from the truth. The owners have created a beautiful oasis of stylish comfort and surroundings. You are greeted with complimentary bottled water or coffee and made to feel as a special guest from the the very first moment. I have not had such good service even from a 5 star hotel. The room was spotless, new and well appointed even having a large LCD TV and DVD player. The bathroom was spacious with a beautiful and large tiled shower.

The hosts (who are from Peru) bent over backwards to be helpful. They had a map of nearby locations for eating, groceries, laundry, pharmacy etc. (By the way, their location is good for sight seeing as the Colosseum is just ten minutes away and the underground just 5 minutes) You are given a voucher to have breakfast at a local establishment around the corner. You can go there as early as 6AM which was great since we had to depart early for our flight back to the USA.

Did I mention the free internet? Wow and all for 79 Euro.

This B&B understands what us budget travelers really need. I feel such places are the wave of the future.

So my best regards to the owners Roberto, Ana, Stefany and Nestor.
