“Very good, quiet B&B in Rome”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 5 February 2012

I spent 5 days with my family in Rome and we chose this B&B strictly because it had triple rooms and because another travel website was highly recommending it. We had a larger room with q king bed and 1 twin, plus our own little yard, where we could enjoy a drink in the evening or a private breakfast. The owners are extremely nice and they have Nespresso in the Lobby area. This made me love them even more.
The room was very clean and quiet and we really had no complaints.
Breakfast was served in a nearby cafe, but it is very limited and one needs to wake up early to get a nice sandwich. Coffee, however, was great.
The hotel is steps away from the Colosseum. We actually only took the subway to go to Vatican and to come back from Piazza della Republica late at night. Everything else was done on foot.
The hotel arranges private transfers from the airport and we were extremely happy with our driver. We were very amused that, when he came to pick us up at the end of our stay, he actually gave us some of the tip we had offered him back, because it was too much. THAT was a first!
Now... reading through other reviews, everybody seems to believe that the hotel was cheap. We paid 160 EUR per night, which translates into roughly $210. Compared to what we pay for a 4* property in the US, this was pricy. Compared to a 4* in Rome, it was very fair :-)

Room Tip: Ask for the "suite". It's actually a slighly larger room, but it has its own little ya...

“Fantastic location, good service for those on a budget”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 December 2011

The best part of this guest house is the location, a little bit tricky to find the street itself, but once there, you are a stones throw away from the Colosseum. Service at the front desk is always with a smile and they are happy to help with taxi bookings etc. Free internet and WiFi are also added bonuses.

That said however, I must say that the photos on Trip Advisor really make it look much more comfortable than it really is. The rooms are small, a bit dark and depressing. Not to mention the bathroom. Breakfast is absolutely terrible, I think it was the worst part of the stay. For being a "budget" hotel, I actually found it on the more expensive side, but was hoping that by paying extra it might mean a bit more comfort. This was not the case.

With a little effort and renovation this could be a much better place. Would recommend it for those happy with youth hostel style accommodation.

Room Tip: If you see a photo on the website you like, my recommendation would be to ask for it.

“A great place at a great price in a great location!”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 December 2011

Booked San Jouan based on good reviews from other travelers and good price (we paid 50Euros per night in December) and we were not disappointed! The rooms are warm, clean and comfortable, although it should be noted that some of the rooms in the main complex do not have windows - might be a bit stuffy in summer (although there are air conditioners).

The staff are very friendly and helpful. Nestor (the owner?) was very helpful in advising us were to visit and the location of good restaurants. He even went out of his way to ring up the Borghese Museum for us to book us a visit. However, the best thing was that after two nights stay, he gave us the option of moving rooms to one of the appartment rooms in the building next door. This room was lovely - spacious and well equipped with a nice view over Rome - all for no extra price! He even moved our bags or us whilst we were out! Thanks Nestor!

Breakfast is served in the main reception area, which is nicely decorated (not in traditional Roman style - I think Nestor is Peruvian!) There is also a nice courtyard outside to have breakfast if the weather is good. Breakfast is basic continental - croissants, cereal, bread + jam and coffee. The only thing we missed was not having some juice available for breakfast (my girlfriend does not drink coffee).

In summary, I would definitely use San Jouan again - it's very well priced with friendly staff and in walking distance of most of the major sights.

“Lower average, but OK for 3 days”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 2 November 2011

Normal hotel, close to the Colosseo. Almost all rooms have no windows! Smells a bit damp.Great sandwiches for breakfast coupon from a nearby store. We had breakfast in the courtyard - parking (same place). Quietly and calmly place.

Room Tip: The first room to the left upon entering. When ordering, specify that you want to room with a window...

“Adequate.”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 27 October 2011

Location is good:near the metro stop and walking distance to major sights. I did not enjoy the fact that our rooms were actually in a whole different building with a dysfunctional lift - so we couldn't really benefit from the coffee and internet service available at the main b+b area. Overall good value for money and would recommend for a short stay when you are planning to be out in Rome all day.
