firstly to say that i saw the recent tv programmme about tripadvisors and to say i am an honest but fait tripadvisor and i use this site to pick my hotels
i read around the reviews and between reviews and to say i have never been let down yet with my choices thankyou all tripadvisors
we arrived at camping fabulous at 11.30 am on sat 23rd oct for half term week
i was a bit apprehensive as the site on some reviews had been discribed as a shanty town.
on first impression the site looked ok so deep sigh of relief
the site is on a hill and the units are mainly shaded under cover of umbrellla pine trees.
At first at reception we were told that we were too early to book in but we could either go away and come back later or we could walk up to the keycamp reception office.
i asked francesca if there was somewhere we could leave our suitcases safley and indeed we were able to place them in a locked shed.
we wandered up to keycamp office and found a notice saying check in started at 3pm.
As we walked through the site we could see why trip advisors had commented on the shanty town appearence. there were plenty of caravans that were stood under a canvas cover obviously the canvas cover offered protection from the hot sun in the summer months.these caravan units did not look unsightly and it was evident at first impression of walking through the campsite that as it was the last week of its open season most caravan units and most holiday bungalows/mobile homes were empty and closed up for the season.
The campsite was deserted with very few people staying. /We didnt mind this at all as piece and quiet is all we really wanted.
As it was end of season and a fact that keycamp with whom we booked had not informed us or made us aware that as end of season most fascilites would be closed.
this has been reflected in my starring and we cant comment on things like the pool as it was indeed closed off and the water looked dirty but in fairness to the site the pool looked lovley and i am sure if during the higher season would have been fab to swim in. the dirty water being that due to pool being closed for the season.
there looked to have been plenty of sunbeds available as we could see all these stacked ready to be stored away for winter.
the icecream parlour was closed and the shop cleared ditto for the games room and cycle hire shop . the internet room was closed and locked for the season as was the information room where you could book trips. the onsite shop was closed and only open in the mornings for a couple of hours and same in the evening. we did glance in when we later found it open and as expected there wasnt too much available as end of season and the prices were a bit on the higher side. bread was available but had to be ordered the day before.
When we eventually checked into our accomodation it was a lovley vista unit(that was the make)we had 2 bedrooms one had 3 beds in it the other room was a double bed with onsuite showe rand toliet
the unit in total had 2 showers and 2 toilets which i think is ideal for if you are a family.
the unit was modern clean and had outside decking with an umbrella and chairs. there was an aircon unit in the home which i would think is a must for the hot summers and also an electric fan. the aircon doubled up as a heater as you could increase the temperature to blow out warm air also there was a small elctric fan heater attached to the wall. we used both and were warm enough during our week.
the unit supplied blankets which were lovely and soft and were clean not smelly.
we hired linen and towels and initially they had been forgotten to be left by the rep when unit cleaned prior to our arrival but once pointed out the rep derrick was quick to bring them.
the key camp had provided in there pre holiday info pack the reps mobile phone number which is a handy thing to have at hand should there be a problem like no linen pack. but to be fiar this problem was immediatley rectified.
in the unit there was a nice airy light feeling the unit accomodation well set out.
the kitchen had full size cooker the grill part where you do your toast was a bit slow in browning the bread but hey we were on holiday and not in a rush.
there was a microwave a cd/ radio and a brilliant hairdryer. i say brilliant as some places i have stayed the jet air has been very weak this one was wonderful in that it had a good strong blast of hot air.
there were discreetly placed dumpster bins for household rubbish at end of the path about 50 yards or so away from our unit.
our mobile home sat back to back almost with a similar unit a bit like bookends with a small space in between.it did not affect our privacy as the units are so positioned in that minimal windows over look each close unit which was namely the bathrooms.
the whole front side of our unit was window with 2 patio doors that oepned onto the decked area this gave a lovley light spacious feel to the unit
the nieghbours across the way was sufficiently well soaced in that it didnt intrude into our privacy. the decked area had also sunbeds available and a clothers airer to hang clothes etc. to dry.
the shower unit cubicles were spacious the jet pressure was ok not brilliant but hey the water was as hot as you wanted it and the jet stream enough to do the job.
we were picked up from airport by a private trans fer which we arranged through keycamp it was expensive but it got us to our campsite.
if you are wanting to go to this campsite there is a transfer service that the campsite does offer its with there minibus whiich has there campsite livery i.e camping fabulous
they charge 15 euro adult which depending on timeings may go down to 12 euro and 8 euro for children aged 4 to 12 they do both the airports and they ask that you book the service at least 2 days prior.
i dont know what happens if say your plane is delayed as if they are picking up from a couple of flights dont know if they wait or come back .
fiumincino airport is about 25mins away that was on a weekend when traffic was light.
the bus stop to the local metro station is easy to find it takes you to eur fermi staion where you take the metro into rome
we bought a 16 euro ticket which coverd us for the week it did metro and bus
be aware that rome has at least 3 rush hour travel times when bus and trains can get buisy very crowded we timed our rome trips in between these times.as previus advisors has said the bus will stop at camping fabulous if the bus looks to be filling up when you alight it at the metro to return opt to stand and stand opposite the door as it wioll indeed get full and you can then get off relativley easy
the locals are polite and they will get off the bus to allow you to get out.
a daily travle 24 hour ticket is 4 euros or you pay one euro which will give 75 mins of bus n train travel but remeber to validate the ticket on getting onto bus.
the bus terminates at eur fermi staion so going in you dont have to worry where to get off as every one gets off there.
returning to campsite here are some landmarks to watch out for you pass a green glass building near eur fermi. look out for the bronze cone shape staue on left then as you travel on cristopher columbus road look our for the euro2 shopping centre on your right then later there is queens stadium on your right. you go on dual carraige way its a bit confusiong cos there are like 2 dual carriage ways side by side the bus travels on one then it crosses to the lother nearside dual carriage way the first time is to stop at euro 2 shop centre then it flicks back to the other dual carraige way for a short way then flicks bak to nearside carriage way to make another drop off at a stop that looks like it is out in the country side. then it will go back onto the other side of dual carriage way land marks look out on the right for what we called the shoebox concrete building with grafeti on it then after this look for the raised banking on side of road its where you can only see what looks like raised grased high banks.
when the raised banking part stops on your right you will see open grouind with huge electric pylons then at this point the road climbs upward you then go up a hill you are aproaching the campsite stop. at top of hill you will then see the traffic lights as the road will then dip down. the bus driver usually stops here as lots of folk get off here. if you are worried then tell driver camping fabulous.
the locla supermarket is easy to find turn right outside campsite walk along side the biusy road its the 3 rd turning on the right and its just down a short way on the left. or you could take the 2dn turning on the right then you will need to take first left then walk along and the al supermarcato is on the corner and foloow a previous advisors tip of taking your wheely suitcase to bring back any large shopping you do
this supermarket is big and had bargains and good offers.
we went to ostia antica as there are ruins to see and well worth a visit the site was quiet and my husband that likes ruins said that it was the highlight of the weeks riuns for him
as i say i am a fair trip advisor so as i have to select ratings they will be reflecting that i didnt actually get to test or try the fascilites due to them being closed for the end of season
i would definatley say that if you want to see roame this is a brill loclation and if you go last week of holiday season the price is cheaper than a hotel
the campsite was spacious clean and we recommend you stay here. the sleep qulity was excellent but i stress the campsite was mainly empty
