“Clean, safe, convenient, affordable”

After reading reviews on how variable many of the hotel rooms in Rome can be, I was terrified to book anything. So, I decided to look into convents and monasteries. From other reviews on DNB, I thought this would be a safe bet on clean, safe lodging. It was.

DNB wasn't the fanciest place in which I've stayed (I usually like to be pampered), but they were very kind and the rooms were more than adequate for my sister and I. It was very quiet even though it was located on a busy street and school children were in the courtyard at times (we closed the window and then didn't hear anything--and I'm very sensitive to noise). There was an elevator which was very nice after a long day! The bathroom was very clean--the corner shower was small but there was even a bidet-- and everything worked (this was one of the scarier parts of reviews of other hotels)! The breakfast was a great start for each day of walking around Rome. It had cappuccino/espresso made to order, 3 italian meats, breads, cheese, cereals, milk, juice, yogurt, fruit and I was introduced to Nutella!

The location was an easy walk from the Termini and was at the north end of Santa Maria Maggiore. The Metro stop was close and the walk to the Forum/Coliseum and Via Condetti/Spanish Steps was reasonable. There were many little shops down the street that we hit almost daily to pick up "cheap" souvenirs and plenty of restaurants of varying types. And we could always find gelato in about every direction.

I have recommended it to others thinking about coming to Rome that want a decent hotel at a decent price.

  • Liked — Location and cleanliness.
  • Disliked — Not a concierge hotel or spa, but that's not what I was looking for.

“clean and comfortable”

This hotel is part of a convent so you'll probably see nuns wandering about, but it is a clean and comfortable place to stay. Its close to Santa Maria Maggiorre on Via Cavour, and easily accesible from cavour metro stop and a short walk from the main train station, as well as having a bus stop just outside that crosses the city to Travestere. The hotel is on a busy road and it can be noisy if you are in one of the rooms at the front - however do ask as if possible they will move you. The rooms are simple - bed, desk and chair with a tiled floor and a few religious pictures but are a reasonable size and are very clean. The breakfast is nothing to get excited over but is more than adequate - except the poor attempts at tea making. There are quite a few restaurants in the area - some are better than others. However completely avoid the british pub in the square up the hill at the back of Santa Maria Maggiore but there is a fantastic ice-cream shop just down the hill from the hotel!

“Immaculate Monastery, Hard Bed”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 17 January 2005

In September 2004, my husband and I paid 100 euro per night. The room was VERY clean, it had AC, a private bathroom with shower, free breakfast, TV, and was reasonably quiet. It's within walking distance of the Termini (Rome's main train station), very convenient location. Curfew was 1:00 a.m., which was no problem. The only issue I had was the bed was VERY hard. My husband and I stayed three nights and were surprised we had little trouble sleeping in the hard bed (we were exhausted). The breakfast was good, the nuns served prosciutto (yummy!), salty white cheese (don't know the name), yogurt, juice and I think coffee. I received information about this monastery in the book, "Lodging in Italy's Monasteries." I made reservations easily by email in English. Their email address is: ---------------, website is --------------------------. Room photos on the website are very representative.
