“A hotel that relies on captive groups and doesn't seem interested in attracting people back.”
My husband and I travelled with Riviera, and were forewarned by the reviews. But first of all it is not true to say that there are no other places to eat other than the hotel, go right, right and right again and the Michele is on your left, or go right, then left into the Via Antonio Pia,then take the first small road on the right which winds through a residential area and the Burro & Sugo is on your right as the road descends. Just a little farther on , on the Viale Leonardo da Vinci is a pizzeria and the Mozzarella & Pomodora. All these places had good reports from our group although the Michele was thought to be a bit expensive.
The food in the hotel was poor. Breakfast was what you would expect when it is described as "continental" but that does not excuse the "orange " juice that was a purple pink colour and tasted of water, nor the eggs which were not just hard boiled but refrigerated and the coffee machine broke down. The croissants were the best things there.
Almost all of us opted to eat in the hotel the first night - the set meal was 30 euros. I suppose it was not too bad but very ... s.l.o.w. Most people went out the next night but we stayed in and wished we hadn't. The pasta was cold and tasteless, the main came with "salad" which turned out to be wet, refrigerated green beans, served late. This meal too was very slow and that was strange with so few people to serve. We sat there for about three and a half hours, taking advantage of the free wine. If the meal had been better and efficiently served we would not have had so much. We heard that one group had refused to sign for the meal. We complained to the manager as we were leaving and he said he thought it was good value for money. No, it was not! We asked if anyone else had complained and he said, rather revealingly, "Not this morning!"
We didn't like the bar, it is below ground and does not have a relaxing atmosphere, being all black polished surfaces with hardly any chairs, not the sort of place you would want to spend any time at all, in fact it was bleak. The prices were 6euros for a small bottle of beer and 8euros for a gin and tonic.
On the plus side the hotel was clean, and our room was fine. That said we would not want to go back there and it is a twenty minute walk to the station.
