We stayed at Anna Rosa's B&B, Via Principe Amedeo 165, Rome, for two 3-night stays, 1-4 April and 11-14 April 2010. We arranged both stays through Cross-Pollinate.
We enjoyed Anna Rosa's very much. It is comfortable, safe & convenient. We would stay there again. We would recommend it to friends.
It is a 3-bedroom flat one floor above the street. The owner does not live on the premises, but visits frequently.
The owner speaks Italian. Vladimir Khasiev (see below) is a native Russian who speaks some English.
Each of the three comfortable bedrooms has its own door lock. Each is equipped with bed, bathroom with toilet, shower, bidet & sink, and a window with shutters, security bars, and curtains.
The main door to the flat has a very secure multiple deadbolt lock. The ground floor door of the building to the street has a key lock.
Materials for making a simple breakfast are provided (juice, coffee, tea, milk, rolls, butter, jam, etc). It has a full kitchen with refrigerator, stove, dishes, silverware, etc.
The furnishings are nice, with the look of antiques. There is a common room with a nice table & chairs for eating, and a common hallway/entryway. There is a small elevator that is useful for moving luggage up and down.
We dealt mainly with Vladimir Khasiev, who grew up in St. Petersburg, Russia, came to Rome about 30 years ago, and is married to Anna Rosa's sister. Vladimir speaks some English. He is friendly and helpful. Vladimir has been all over Rome and other areas of Italy, and gave us a map of the city and some good suggestions for things to see, walking tours, etc. He gave us a demonstration of the use of the coffee maker, a type we had not encountered before, which I have since found is called a Moka; it made excellent coffee.
The first 3 nights, we stayed in a back bedroom, window on a back alley. This was very quiet. The second three nights we chose to stay in the front bedroom, window on the street. That room is a little larger. Vladimir warned us we might hear street noises; however, with the window closed, the street noises were not bothersome. In that front room, we did hear some noises from the next-door apartment (not part of Anna Rosa's).
The feel of the place is much like a nice private apartment, with the hosts mostly away.
In all, it is lovely, comfortable and safe, an excellent value.
It is very convenient to the Termini train station, Metro, etc, just a short walk, which was a big plus factor for us.
The neighborhood seems a bit gritty at first, but on longer acquaintance is fine, even friendly. The shops along the street are inexpensive, owned by various Asian & Middle Eastern people. There are several Italian restaurants nearby, and there is a very good inexpensive kebab/pizza restaurant a few blocks away toward Santa Maria Maggiore, and an internet point in a laundromat next door to the restaurant (we found the laundromat with internet first, then the Kebab place).
We used Anna Rosa's as our base for walking around Rome, and getting to and from the train, Metro, etc.
We would be happy to stay there again, and would recommend it to anyone.
Of course it is a B&B, not a hotel, so it might not be suitable for those looking for the full services offered by a hotel. But for people looking for a comfortable, well-appointed apartment, with do-it-yourself breakfast etc, it is excellent.
The directions for finding the place from the train could stand some improvement. We first arrived from the airport by way of the Leonardo Express. The exit from the station nearest that train is across from Via Mamiani, which is a few blocks back along the tracks away from the main entrance of the station. In vain, we looked for the McDonalds and Via Ratazzi mentioned in the directions. We set out along Via Mamiani and eventually found Via Principe Amedeo, asking people directions. Street signs are visible at some corners, but not all. Once we found Via Principe Amedeo, we were able to find #165, ring the bell and get in, and were given a friendly greeting by Vladimir Khasiev.
