For the first time in my memory, Trip Advisor steered me wrong. I generally rate hotels very favorably and forgivingly. However, this does not deserve the high acclaim ("Simply Beautiful?") it gets here.
Anyone who books based on the reviews will need to arm themselves with this information: You will receive the basics here. When you arrive, the "quiet street" is what we in the States would call an alley. If you are expecting a nice entrance, you will be disappointed. The bed is hard (as are most we found in Italy) but acceptable and the two different rooms we stayed in were big enough. The A/C worked quite well in both rooms, which is saying something compared to reviews we've seen of other Rome hotels. There is always one person on staff...Alessandro in particular was very helpful. Housekeeping generally kept the rooms very clean. The rooms, however, are very dated and tired. The bathrooms are virtually non-functional and quite small. We expect small bathrooms in Europe, but with a bidet, toilet, sink and extremely small shower in each tiny bathroom, there was no room to move. In one of the two rooms, the bidet was situated exactly where you would stand at the sink; the result being that you had to stand at a 45 degree angle to the sink to squeeze between the bidet and the shower. Both showers were so small that it was difficult to bathe properly and neither contained a soap dish or ledge, so you fumbled with the soap every time. One shower head was broken and would not stay in position, so you had to use it by hand, making the soap fumbling even more difficult. We gave up on the tiny non-lathering soap and bought our own at a nearby store (the store, Despar, is conveniently located a couple of blocks away on Via Nazionale). The window latches and metal shades were old, loose or broken. There was a sensor on the 3rd floor that beeped loudly and announced "Welcome!" in a simulated voice everytime someone entered - and it was audible in the rooms. Very annoying. Depending on your room location, you will get quite a bit of noise from the traffic on Via Nazionale. No one I know would describe what we experienced as "simply beautiful."
In summary: If you expect a charming hotel and room, you will be disappointed. If you are price shopping and prepared to accept very basic, average and dated accomodations with some expected and unexpected quirks and inconveniences, this will suffice. If you stayed in this hotel in Denver or Chicago you would give it a 1 or 2 star review; in Rome I will give it a forgiving 3 because of its location (convenient to the Metro and Termini) and several members of the staff who were kind and helpful.
