“Perfect Rome Honeymoon with a view of the Spanish Steps”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 October 2010

Lovely hotel with just four rooms, but owned by the far superior Hotel Hassler at the top of the Spanish Steps. Our honeymoon room had a lovely shuttered window looking over the steps. The receptionist was so incredibly friendly, helping us with restaurant bookings and an absolutely brilliant tour of Rome in a vintage Fiat 500. There is a cool roof terrace bar which is a great place to go for a sundowner - lots of free nibbles to go with your glass of beer or pinot. The floor below has an excellent restaurant, but beware the Hotel Hassler price tag. Our room was the floor below that. If approaching from the bottom of the Spanish Steps there is a lift to take you up to the top. Breakfast is a short walk away at the Hassler - v smart hotel, but they made us feel very special by remembering us and greeting us by name each morning. Breakfast was included in our room rate, otherwise it was €35-€45.

We borrowed bicycles from the Hassler one day and went into the nearby Borghese gardens which was lovely. Our receptionist had recommended a salumeria which we visited first to get a picnic and a bottle of wine. Heavenly.

One thing we hadn't realised was the the Spanish Steps in the evenings tends to draw large crowds of teenagers who gather on the lower steps, all quite harmless, but there was a bit of noise from this, and when they departed from the rubbish men clearing up after them. However hotel is higher up the steps so it's not really a problem.

Excellent location, beautiful room, friendly service...it was quite pricey but it was our honeymoon and well worth the treat.

“Beautiful Room, but Will Not Stay Here Again”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 8 August 2010

We returned last month from our amazing 16 night trip to Italy. Our home for our last 2 nights of this trip was il Palazzetto. Check-in at the Hassler Hotel (the sister property, where you check in if you are staying at il Palazzetto) was smooth, and we were shown Room 1, a nice sized room with a view overlooking the Spanish Steps. The becolumned decor was luxurious, featuring a spacious armoire stuffed with amenities at the foot of the enormous and comfortable bed, big bathtub and separate glass-doored shower.
We had breakfast at the Hassler, which is included with the room when you stay at Il Palazzetto. The Hassler is pretty fancy, and the service inattentive, bordering on snobbish, a big change after all the enthusiastic service throughout Umbria and Tuscany on this trip, but breakfast itself was fine.

At some point on our second day, we made the mistake of trying to print out our boarding passes at the Hassler.

We had asked the front desk at the Palazzetto how to get our boarding passes printed, and she said to go to the Hassler's concierge, and he would print them for us. Not so, as all he was willing to do was point us to the main desk to ask for a key to the business center. The "business center" turned out to be a closet with two computers and a printer, which, we discovered upon trying to print, was out of black ink! After first calling back down to the front desk, then my husband actually GOING back to the front desk, they told us in their perfect English that a technician would be coming by to resolve the issue. The man they sent, though, spoke no English, and was NOT a technician of any sort we could determine. He spent some considerable time randomly clicking around in Windows, as if to discover the root of our problem, while the print queue (and the printer itself) flashed the answer at him in his own language! Sadly, we didn't know how to say "black ink cartridge" in any way that made sense to him, and he couldn't, ultimately, help us! So we went BACK to the front desk, where THEY were unable to print out our boarding passes, because, on the airline's website, it thought they'd already been printed!!! We walked away with no boarding passes. It was very frustrating, and between the indifferent attitude and the incompetence, we will not stay there again.

(As far as we know, the legendary Hassler Hotel, favored stay for world leaders and movie stars, at the top of the Spanish Stairs since the 1800s, still has no black ink in their printer. Good luck.)

While in Rome we visited the main sites, and ate at two very good restaurants, Sangallo and La Tavernetta.

We’ve done an entire day-by-day trip report which give a lot more information about the towns and restaurants we visited (most of them in Southern Tuscany and Northern Umbria), which you can see here: http://willtravelforfoodandwine.blogspot.com/

“Wonderful experience”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 April 2010

We stayed for 3 nights in room number 4. The room was beautiful, very spacious and had a fantastic view of the Spanish Steps. We were given a very warm welcome by the staff, particularly by Beate who did the check-in for us. Breakfast at the Hassler was a lovely experience. Overall a thoroughly enjoyable stay. Having an aperitivo in Palazzetto's "secret garden" is a must (most nights from around 7pm).

“Great Value, Great Location”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 March 2010

We split our stay between the hotel Hassler and the Il Palazzetto during this trip. The Hotel Hassler was impressive, and the service was excellent.
The best thing about the Il Palazzetto for me was that one evening, we decided to eat in the restaurant and we opened a bottle of wine (prices of wine here are very good) since we could not finish it at the table, they let us take the wine and the glasses to our room and finish it there at our leisure.
The window opens right to the Spanish steps. You could literally set up a camera in the room, go to the Steps, click on the remote to shoot pictures of you in the steps from your room.

The staff was very friendly and helpful. It's a very homey hotel in a great location. Only downside was that you have to share the elevator with the food service of the restarant upstairs and it gets difficult to get the elevator during a function. Otherwise, we loved this hotel.

“Absolutely Amazing Place”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 15 February 2010

This was one of the most fantastic stays we've ever had. First, the location could not be beat. It is literally at the top of the Spanish steps. Adjacent to a busy train station, you can enter the front door on a side pedestrian way. During the evening hours when the front is all locked up you walk through a very chic bar (with fantastic drinks) and enter your room that way. A few steps past the church at the top of the Spanish steps is The Hotel Hassler. At our stay we had breakfast every morning included at the Hassler in a lovely courtyard. The Hassler is classic and posh - not somewhere I'd favor staying- which made it perfect to visit and sleep in the more modern less stuffy Il Palazetto. Since our stay was in August, we actually had to check-in at the Hassler and use their concierge services because the wine school and front desks in Il Palazetto were closed for August. This wasn't a problem at all since The Hassler was so close by. The bars in both hotels are beautiful in your own right (you can get on the roof of the Hassler for a great view of Rome). The room in Il Palazetto was amazing. Spacious, plush, plush bed. Great tub. The window in our bathroom overlooked a side area on the Spanish steps. You could hear the heartbeat of the city if you wanted or close it if you wanted. It was so fun to sit on the steps and be part of the action but even nicer to sit in Il Palazetto bar and people watch. Stay here! We got an amazing deal in August! The desks and wine school weren't staffed but the maids made up the rooms every day. With only 8 rooms, this is truly a hidden gem. We couldn't have asked for a more romantic getaway in the heart of Rome.
