“Beautiful Hotel....But!!!!!!”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 13 August 2011

The Palazzo Manfredi is a beautiful hotel with a spectacular view of the Colosseum. Beautiful rooms etc. But!! We booked the Penthouse apartment, since we were a family of five. We were brought to our apartment which is not in the same building or even next door. Don't want to sound like I'm stuck up, but after leaving the hotel I expected the same type of entrance at least. The apartment is in an old building, no elevator. Had to climb 72 steps 2 times everyday. Imagine a hot exhausting day after walking all over Rome and now you have to climb all these steps. Later you go out for supper come back fairly late and again have to climb these stairs. The apartment was very nice and well decorated but the air conditioning did not furnish the size of the apartment. The water would get cold when the 5th person would go in to take a shower. I booked from a 5 star hotel,I expected if not the same but similar.

We made the best of our stay and never complained. We left disappointed and won't be back.

“Pros and Cons”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 6 July 2010
2
people found this review helpful

My husband and I stayed at the Hotel Gladiatori at the beginning of July. Instead of recommending or not recommending I will list the pros and cons and you can decide for yourself...

PROS:
1) Great location - steps away from the Coliseum and also good location for walking to other places of interest in Rome.
2) Nice rooftop terrace - small but nice.
3) Nice continental breakfast although not a lot of variety but it was good - fresh squeezed orange juice and warm croisants.
4) Nice staff.
5) Nice fruit plate upon arrival to our room and glasses of champagne when we arrived to the hotel.
6) Coliseum tickets were included in our room package as was the daily continental breakfast.

CONS:
1) I would rate this hotel as a 6 or 7 on a 10point scale. We came to Rome from Prague where we stayed in an excellent boutique hotel so this hotel was a bit of a let down in comparison.
2) One night we were sleeping when someone knocked at our door (didn't actually hear the knocks at first) and then started to come in the room until my husband yelled out. The person apologized and then left. I called down to the front desk to report the incident. The gentleman I spoke to also apologized and said that he had a new person that was coming in for turn down service - problem is that it was at 11pm! I've never heard of turn down sevice at that time of night.
3) When we arrived to the hotel there were two small bottles of water and we kind of expected to have that on a daily basis - didn't happen. We were really thirsty one night when we returned to our hotel and my husband called down to ask for two bottles of water. None arrived so he called again approx 30-45 mins later and someone brought a tall bottle of water BUT it was $16 Euros!!! Needless to say, my husband took it back to the front desk and requested it be taken off our bill which was done. My husband was told the bottle of water was $6 Euros and that a $10 Euro supplemental charge was also included BUT didn't get an explanation on what the supplemtental was for - either way we were NOT paying $16 Euros for a bottle of water! On our last night we went up to the terrace because my husband wanted a glass of wine but I just wanted ice water - that one glass of water with ice and one refill cost me $5 Euros. Do yourself a favor and try to find a little market that sells bottled water - I bought a bottle as cheap as $.29 but we never could find that market again. We did buy water at the stands around the city which was usually $2 Euros - still too much in my opinion but we really didn't have a choice. When I could I would buy it frozen and it lasted so much longer in the heat.
4) I asked about hiring a guide and we decided against that when we were told it was $60 Euros/hour with a minimum of three hours AND this did not include transportation or entrance fees. The better bet is to hire a guide when you get to the attraction. We did this at the Coliseum (just look for someone with a badge before you get in line) and it only cost us $8 Euros/person and this included an English speaking tour inside the Coliseum for 45 mins - 1 hr and a 45 min tour throughout Palatine Hill. Also, we reserved our Vatican tour online through the Vatican Website.

MISC:
1) I'm glad I visited Rome but be prepared if this is your first visit - it's a very dirty city with trash and graffiti everywhere - really a shame.
2) It cost us $43 Euros to take a taxi from our hotel to the airport. The estimate we were given was $50 Euros so be prepared to pay that amount.
3) We were able to go all the way to the top of the Dome (Cupula) at Vatican City. It costs $5 Euro/person but be aware that there are a LOT of steps and the last few can be a little claustrophobic - but I'm glad I went all the way to the top.

I'd be happy to answer any questions regarding this hotel or Rome in general.

“Outstanding”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 April 2010

This boutique hotel is right next to the Coliseum and walking distance to the other historical must-see sights in Rome. Terrific front desk staff and the restaurant on the roof is great for a romantic gourmet meal and they do breakfast too with real American coffee (you will have a hard time finding good American coffee anywhere in Italy). Of all the hotels we stayed at in Rome (first night) then Florence and Venice, this was the best hotel if you are ok with boutique elegance rather than a huge resort style hotel.

“Spacious and elegant.”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 28 December 2009

We were very happy with the service. We arrived at 04:45am and was met at the airport and taken to the hotel, we stayed in one of the suites, checking it took 2 minutes after which the driver took as to the suite. It was very comfortable and well equipped. More than enough space for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. We battled with our internet connection, after failing to get connected the hotel offered their laptop for the duration of our stay. The only drawback was getting back after a busy Sunday to find the room uncleaned. We will definitely recommend this hotel to our friends.

“Great View and Lovely Staff”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 26 December 2009

The Hotel Gladiatori was great! The view from our room was AMAZING and the modern decor was beautiful. Also, the front desk staff was very helpful and had great recommendations. The only complaint we had was the AC wasn't turned on in the building since it was winter and it was quite warm a few nights. Also, our room was next to the kitchen so the noise in the morning was a bit loud--but if you are an early riser this shouldn't be a problem. All in all it was a great stay in Rome! Thanks!
