“Allocated on arrival!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 4 October 2006

I have been to Rome 3 times. Twice I have booked with Italia Lodging, twice my accommodation has been changed on arrival!

Just want to be clear, Maria B&B seems to consist of a network of B&Bs. The first time I booked I was lucky in the version of Maria B&B which has a courtyard and is all newly rennovated. However, I was with a group of 10 friends and although we had booked together to stay in one location, we were split up into different locations - not at all ideal! Unfortunately, the rest of the group were taken off tostay at a B&B 10 minutes away and was in a much worse area, with lower quality accommodation, B&B Maria - the ugly sister it would seem!.

Last weekend I'd actually booked to stay at B&B Emanuele on Via Bixio, but ended up at guess what...B&B Maria, but not the nice one , the ugly sister!

It was confusing as we were told we were now staying at Maria B&B, but all the signs said B&B Chiara Stella. Then it clicked, this must be a scam they've got going on between a netowrk of B&Bs. Take the bookings on Italia lodging website and then allocate on arrival.

We had no explanation as to why we were being moved just a print out that said due to 'technical problems' we were being moved, the woman taking us to our alternative accommodation spoke no english and I gave up trying to find out why this was happening again. She mistakingly gave me 2 sheets, the other was obviously for another guest to whom the same thing was happening.

See my review of Chiara Stella/Maria B&B for more details of where we ended up!

I won't be using this website (italia lodging) for booking again as I don't like the allocated on arrival process.

“Mixed experience”

We stayed here for two days and it was a mixed experience. When I booked the room over the internet I got a phone call from the manager asking when exactly I'd be arriving, as he needed to make sure that someone would be there. When we arrived at the agreed time, though, the hotel was locked and nobody could be found. This was extremely annoying as we'd had a long journey, the phone numbers given on the website didn't seem to work, and the mobile number of the manager was switched off. Eventually some other guests arrived, let us in, and advised us to go next door where there is another hotel under the same management (we had not been told this). Eventually everything was sorted out but it was a stressful experience.

The hotel itself is generally fine - the sitting area in the back where you have breakfast is nice, and it's good to have use of the kitchen. However, the hotel is very small, and the rooms open out onto reception. This means that it can be very noisy - you basically wake up when everyone else gets up for breakfast. In terms of location, it's a good ten minutes' walk from the main train station, and probably about twenty minutes from the Colloseum - quite a walk really.

I suppose €50 a night for a place in Rome (what we paid) isn't too bad, but I don't think I'd choose the same place again.

“Nice place to stay”

Maria's B&B in Rome was very nice. It was exceptionally clean and quiet. Although niether Maria nor her assistant, Tatiana spoke English, they were very helpful and accommodating. The breakfasts were typically European, yogurt, breads (none homemade), jams, cereal and coffee or tea, nothing fancy, but quite adequate. Maria's is several doors away from a bakery and the smell of freshly baked bread always permeated our senses. All-in-all it was a good experience.

“Simple, very clean... and in the center!”

We've stayed at Bed & Breakfast Maria for 3 nights, finding it on the internet by chance(-------------------------).

Very good value for the price: double with ensuite bathroom, air cond and breakfast (you prepare it yourself), at 90 €. The room is simple but very clean, and in summer you can have breakfast in the private courtyard.

100 mt from Manzoni metro, and very close to Termini train station

Bring the phone number with you and call: the receptionist is there just few hours/day!
