“A hidden gem”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 19 June 2011

The Hotel Villa San Lorenzo is a hidden gem in a neighborhood that does not, at first appearance, look like a thriving area. Don't be fooled by the neighborhood - the buildings in the area are covered with graffiti, but remember graffiti is an art form that goes back to the days of the Roman Empire.
The first look at the hotel from its beautifully manicured front courtyard and parking lot is one of marvel - the foliage and trees in front are very tasteful and well kept, and the hotel has a perquisite that is not often seen in Rome - Free Parking!
The staff is friendly and helpful, the lobby area is sparkling with comfortable seating and marble everywhere. The breakfast room has marble floors, travertine wainscoting on the walls, and two beautiful crystal chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. The servers at breakfast are attentive, and the espresso and capoccino are excellent. The breakfast spread is typical of a Roman hotel - croissants, both plain and filled, cold cereals, cold meat and cheese slices, cereals, fruit juices, rolls, and so on. It is all fresh and very good.
The guest room we stayed in was clean and comfortable, with a king sized bed, desk, and armoir, two end tables, two armchairs, a telephone, and several electrical outlets for things like camera and cell phone chargers and razors. The bathroom had a lighted medicine cabinet, bidet, toilet, sink, and a shower. The shower stall was somewhat small, but as good as can be found for the cost of the room. They had a deal were if you stay five nights, the sixth night is free.
Wireless high speed internet is available for a nominal fee - 7 Euro for 48 hours.

“Pretty good”

In the middle of a student area, with gritty urban surround sits this old villa: a haven of peace and elegance.
It's a simple hotel. Rooms look and feel historic: not everyone's taste, but rather lovely. Windows have old shutters & you awake to the sounds of Rome, open sutters and observe the patio with trees and birds and bright sunlight. It's all rather lovely.
Service matches the hotel: polite, courteous, even elegant: old worldly in the best way.
Location is odd: feels like hotel shoudl be with its cousins back in the Aventino: but if you need to be in this part of town, it's a gem.

Good service, nice location for young people
Although not near the center of Rome, has good restaurants and bars near the hotel.
Nice clean room
The service at reception was courteous and patient.
Average breakfast, but good.
Excellent price in relation to value
Suitable only for those who do not care to take the bus 10-15 minutes to the center of Rome

“Decent choice for the euro-conscious traveler”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 August 2010

It was an oppressively hot July, and only on my second day did the cleaning staff switch on a button for air-conditioning that I hadn't found--but that was my fault for not having asked. The hotel is respectable and a fair share of its clientele appears to be Europeans coming by car. The hotel is east off the railroad tracks leading into Termini station, just outside Rome's ancient walls -- not really close to any of Rome's treasures, but within reasonable walking distance (even on a blisteringly hot day!) of Porta Maggiore, the university quarter, and the priceless church of San Lorenzo. If you're relying on public transit, you'll need to connect by tram or bus to one of the principal lines or to the Metro. Still, I got a great rate for decent quarters, and when peaking into the other rooms being cleaned I think mine was by no means the best in the establishment!

“Fantastic Service”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 April 2010

We have stayed in this hotel before and we will stay again. We were caught up in the volcanic situation re Iceland. The staff at this hotel were very helpful. We had booked out and when we phoned them from the airport they told us to come back and even if they could not guarantee our previous room they would make sure we had a room for the rest of our stay. They could not enough to help us through the difficult few days. We know Rome very well and we like the bohemian San Lorenzo district. There are plenty of amenities, markets and shops available. Yes. you do have to travel to the landmark sights but this area has a real buzz to it. It is also the university district so there are also many bars and a fabulous trattoria called Armando's in piazza Tiburtina. The rooms are clean and fresh the breakfast is plentiful and varied and the value is excellent for 3 star. We will use this hotel again as a base for when we visit Rome.
