I spent a great deal of time looking for a hotel for my first trip to Rome. It took some time to research the neighborhoods and how close things are to the Metro and sights. I was not disappointed at all by this hotel's location. The hotel is on Via Veneto, a beautiful, wide, tree-lined street that seems so peaceful after a hectic day of sightseeing in the often chaotic and crowded Rome. The Barbarini Metro stop is a 5-10 minute walk, and there is also an underground tunnel that connects to the Spagna Metro. In the tunnel is a grocery store that sells whatever you might need for reasonable prices. You can also buy things to bring home (pasta, cookies, soap, etc.). You can easily walk to the Spanish Steps. If you can't get to something via the Metro or walking, bus 116 stops nearby and we took it to Campo di Fiorno, Pantheon, Piazza Navona, Trevi, etc. You can buy a map at the newsstand right outside the hotel.
The hotel is exactly as it appears on the website. We had room XXL, which was large enough for three of us. The room faced an inside courtyard, which was quiet. Unfortunately, the room was not always quiet. The walls are thin and I woke every morning to someone showering and blowing his nose in an adjacent room. The maid also starts at 7 am, and there is a great deal of noise from the activity in the small hallway. I would suggest earplugs if you are a light sleeper.
There are only 7 rooms, and the staff is present from 7 am to 10 pm. The hotel is located on the second floor, above some retail shops. They provide you with three keys -- a key to the front of the building, the hotel's front door and your room. This is not a hotel for people who want a full service hotel experience. It is much better suited for independent travelers. There is no "lobby" and only one staff member sits at a small desk. While the staff was extremely friendly, I didn't find them overly helpful with travel tips. I asked one night how to take public transit to the Pantheon and it was suggested I take a taxi. It was very easy to take the bus, which I found on my own. I had also asked in advance about taking a day trip to Pompeii, and the company they recommended had very bad reviews on TA.
Beside the location, the other thing I really liked about this hotel was how clean it was. The room and bathroom were immaculate every day of our trip. They also provide Bulgari bath products, which was a nice touch. Every room has an iMac with free Internet. The connection seemed a little slow, but we didn't use it more than a few times to check email and locations of restaurants. The bed was also extremely comfortable. It didn't bother us, but there is no bathtub, just a shower.
Breakfast is provided either in your room or at the restaurant next to the hotel (Caffe Strega). For your room, you can select coffee, juice, cereal, yogurt, croissant, selection of newspaper and the time you want it delivered to your room. If you opt to eat at Caffe Strega, the options are similar, but one choice included fresh fruit and another had an omelet. We found the food delivered to the room was better, but half way through our trip the person delivering breakfast changed and our cappuccinos arrived cold every morning.
We didn't eat at any restaurants on Via Veneto, but ventured a few blocks off the street. One gem was San Marco, which had excellent pizza and pasta at reasonable prices. For a splurge, we walked to the nearby Hotel Eden and had drinks on the rooftop terrace. We did the same at the nearby Hotel Sofitel. Both provided amazing sunset views of Rome. Very beautiful and worth the cost of a drink.
The other bonus to this location is how close it is to Villa Borghese. It is only a block away from the spacious park. We rented rickshaws and a golf cart to tour the park. It is also a great place to find some shade and a snack and do some people watching. Had a café freddo at the Cine Café and a drink and panini while sitting outside at Pic Nic under the giant apian trees; it was a delight.
If you use the hotel to book your transportation to/from the airport, make sure you ask specifically about your return transport. The pickup was great (a driver was outside baggage holding a sign with my name on it) and we were driven in a Mercedes directly to the hotel for 50 euro. I asked for the hotel to arrange the same transport back, and was surprised when I walked outside to find a taxi at the curb. I was even more surprised when I got to the airport and the driver wanted 50 euro instead of the flat 40 euro fee for taxi transit to the airport. That 40 euro price was even posted in the back of the taxi. I could have easily walked to the taxi stand at the corner and arranged the same for less.
Overall, this was a good hotel experience and I would stay here again based on the location alone.
