“Simply Awful!”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 21 April 2010

In short this place is total rubbish, never staying there again! Everything everyone else states on trip advisor is true, we got moved from a supposed decent hostel that we chose through tripadvisor (being the chianti hostel) to Freestyle.

The place is ridiculous, only 2 bathrooms with showers in them (so not a separate toilet even) for more than 30 people. The showers are such that as soon as you've used one the next person can expect to get wet feet when going to the toilet. The water from the shower was also horrible, either scalding hot or freezing cold with no in between.

There is no real common room, no tv at all, a single computer for internet use, you cannot be in the hostel if you want to all day. They say this is cause of cleaning but the place is downright filthy, all they clean is the floor. The pillows and the kitchen are totally disgusting.

Don't stay here you wil regret it!

“Avoid like the plague”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 16 April 2010

We had booked Chianti Hostel in Rome for Easter weekend. 2 days before travel we were told the hostel was closed due to "hydraulic problems" and would be shifted to Freestyle at the same rate. Due to the short notice and it being Easter weekend we didn't have time to check out Freestyle or to look for new accommodation.

The place is awful. It literally was about 26-30 bunks crammed into 3 small dorms. Two toilet/shower cubicles for 30 people is not cool. Water was only hot some of the time. Breakfast was cornflakes and stale bread with jam/nutella. The 'amazing free dinner' was pasta sauce from a can. The 'free wine' was out of a plastic bottle; there was no beer option.

There is no common room - if more than 8 people are in the reception area, you have to sit on the floor to socialise. There is only one computer for internet. There aren't even any windows which makes the place very claustrophobic. There are a few lockers, but not enough for one per person, and they may not fit your bag. The dorm room we were in was used as a general luggage store of other people's gear. There is definitely no TV as advertised on some websites. The kitchen is tiny and we would not feel comfortable using it.

We were given sheets, however the hostel overall was very dirty (mould on walls in bathroom, food left out overnight in kitchen, etc)

Some older reviews / photos seem to indicate this place might used to be better. Perhaps fewer people were able to stay. Now it seems as though they are trying to cash in on a previous reputation to make as much money as possible (some fellow travellers were paying €30 a night for a dorm bed).

I can well believe other reviews about police being called into the hostel.

Other reviews mention being sent here after the first hostel they booked told them they'd been moved. If you want to avoid this place, then perhaps avoid those other hostels (e.g. Chianti Hostel in our case) as there could be a scam involved in shipping people around hostels.

“horrible experience”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 June 2009

Freestyle is close to the termini station, this is only good thing about this hostel but the rooms ware really bad. there was only 2 bathrooms for three 11-bed rooms. beds were squeaking and blankets were smelling like they have never been washed. we only stayed there as we had paid the money. even if u r looking for a "value for money" place, still avoid this. this hostel is terrible

“illegal hostel don't stay here”
1 of 5 stars Reviewed 3 April 2009

Originally we booked Happy Days Hostel, but theysent us to this hostel as there was overbooking, or so they said. The place turned out to be a disaster. It has three 9 bedded rooms, and only two tiny bathrooms. The window in our room couldn't be closed. There is no reception, they use one of the dorms as their office. We asked them several times to give us a receipt for the payment, but they told us lies. They offered us free breakfast and dinner, breakfast was basic but good, but the dinner was the same for a whole week: pasta+tomato souce. We had to line up in order to get our dinner like in a concentration camp, and as there were no tables we had to eat standing up. We had to wait for hours to get into the bathrooms, which are right next to the kitchen, and you can imagine how they smell.
We stayed 6 days/5 nights here. On the 5th day at 6.30 in the morning the police woke us up, they told us that the hostel is closed, because it's workong illegally, and we had to leave. The owner Kumar from Punjab, has no documents for the hostels, he runs them illegally, that's why they refused to give us receipt. So at 7 in the mornong we had to leave, the hostel was closed by the police. DON'T GO TO HOSTELS IN ROME, they are all fakes, and illegal

“Freestyle hostel - Roma - review”

Freestyle" was close to the termini station so the location is quite good, but the room we got there was really bad. The window was broken, it was cold outside and very cold in the room. There were no electricity sockets inside the room and no heating equipment. Our group of 10 people were split among the rooms.

The rooms were very crowded by beds, ours had 11 beds very close one to another and you couldn't even put your luggage anywhere. There were no locks on the doors, and no security at all. The rooms were also locked betweend 11 and 3pm to clean, but there was actualy no cleaning at all, they just moved you luggage in the room.

We had our sleeping bags with us and it turned to be the best thing we could have brought in our trip, because in the room was really cold fo use the blankes they gave you.

There was a small hallway, room with some chairs and a computer connected to the internet that you could use (only till 22:30). After 23:00 there was an anoying guy that won't let you socialize, drink or talk in that hallway with others because "it's late and people are sleeping" although the doors to the rooms were closed. But there was also a nice lady that helped us a lot with informations and stuff.

There are 2 bathrooms for more than 30 people(when the hostel is full) and it's really incredible how long you could wait to get your turn. One of the bathrooms was inside a room and you had to croos the whole room to get to it, and the toiled there was not even working.

Overall I would not recommand staying unless you're really poor and you cannot afford more than 10E/night in a better place. The only good thing about it was the ability to meed new people, complaing about the bad conidition togheter with them and the location wich is good to go to the center/airport/other sights.
