“Suprisingly Good”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 11 January 2007

We booked this double ensuite room through a hostel website and were expecting a bit of a hostel environment but our room was great. It was in a refurbished part of the hostel with its own little area reserved for double ensuite rooms. It was well decorated and had a shower/toilet/bidet/sink. It was quite small but managed to fit in a little fridge and wardrobe with a bedside cabinet. It also had air con and a telly. The bed was comfy. There was even soap and shampoo which is great if your travelling light, and towels. the only drawback was a slightly continental whiff in the bathroom. If you've travelled around europe though you'll get used to it.

The location was fine for us. It was about a 5 minute walk from Termini so we were able to walk up and get on any of the hundreds of buses that leave termini, we also had a go on the metro.

Its a funny set up. You go to the entrance and inside there are several entrances to various hotels/hostels. The reception function was great, we got maps and info and were checked in and out really quickly. Cash only though. no credit cards.

We paid about £40 per night for the room.

“Don't go there..”

This hostel is over-rated severely.
I stayed here when I was referred to it after the Yellow Hostel was booked up.
It was the most expensive hostel out of my whole 6 week interrailling trip around Europe costing 23 euros for a dorm bed inc breakfast.
Friends beware! Breakfast at Stargate is not what you would expect for your good money, it was horrible coffee and a stale croissant. No juice, no fresh milk, served by a lady who didn't care one bit that she was giving you rubbish.
The staff were not friendly, treating my friend and I like suspicious thieves when we tried to get our backpacks from the luggage room (which by the way is a dusty unfurnished room just been built, left unlocked), laughed when we asked if there were any dvds we could borrow or a common room - even though the Yellow Hostel has an abundance of these you can borrow for free not to mention the free internet and in general had a cold, curt manner that was most unpleasant and disagreeable.
To add insult to injury, the bathrooms were a disgrace, no toilet roll, rust, leaks, dirt everywhere. People often were standing in a queue outside at nighttime as well as the morning.
This hostel really is NOT worth going to. It completely rips you off, making you pay for terrible service which for the same price you could get much more. Take my advice, try as hard as possible to go to the Yellow Hostel! Stargate is half a building with long corridors, not atmosphere and no place for packpackers to hang out.
Awful.

“Don't use the extra blanket!”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 7 April 2006

I was terrified about going here as I had read loads of reviews saying this place was terrible. But those reviews were mainly old ones, and more recent reviews had better things to say so I thought maybe they had cleaned up their act. When we arrived I was really impressed. Our room was lovely, defnitely more hotel-style than hostel-style, and we had a private bathroom which I had not ordered or paid for. The staff were friendly, the location great and all seemed fine. I didn't catch the breakfast, but Termini station is a 5 minute walk away and full of places you can buy juice, coffee and doughnuts. I had read a few reviews about this place having bedbugs, so when we arrived I checked the bed thoroughly but saw no signs of them. But on the last night, I was a little chilly and took the extra blanket from the wardrobe. This was obviously crawling with bedbugs because the bites started appearing the next day as we flew home. We ended up with over 100 bites each on our arms, shoulders and face which hurt like hell, looked like chicken-pox and took over a week to disappear. My verdict - Okay place to stay , but DON'T USE THE EXTRA BLANKET!

“Great Hostel”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed 29 March 2006

We ordered a private double without ensuite and got a huge quad room with bathroom so that was a nice surprise! A person was sent to our room early in the morning though which we weren't happy with, obviously the member of staff at the time wasn't aware we had booked a private room. The location was brilliant, only 5 mins from termini station and about 25 mins from the Colluseum (or 10 mins by tube), the cost was the cheapest we could find (book through hostelbookers.com) and the staff really friendly and knowledgable. They directed us to restaurants, souvenier places and bars. The breakfast lady was really rude though and 1 pastry and a coffee is now what i call breakfast but for the price i can't really complain. i'd definately stay again and recommend to anyone.

“Near Perfect Hostel”

We stayed here for 6 days and had a wonderful experience - I would recommend it highly. The staff were hugely helpful and friendly, and gave us advice as to the best restaurants in the area surrounding Termini Station etc. We stayed in a twin room which had a lovely stone floor and stone ceiling and was quiet and fully air-conditioned which was a real bonus - Rome in July is SOOO hot! Our room was also equipped with a TV, fridge and computer with internet access (at no extra charge). We booked an ensuite room and our bathroom was kept spotlessly clean with a really great shower. The breakfast provided was adequate, comprising a sweet croissant and tea or coffee. The area the hostel was in was perfect for a back-packer. It's about 5 minutes walk to Termini Station from where you can get a bus, metro, or train more or less anywhere you like. As an aside, on one of the days we were in Rome, the metro and bus workers were on strike rendering these services out of use for the day. So we took the train to a hill-side town called Tivoli just outside of Rome, and as it transpired, the gardens at Villa D'Este (by far the most breath-taking I've ever seen) were a highlight of our trip. To sum up, this is the best hostel I've ever stayed in, and I would certainly stay here again.
