“Handy but noisy”

We (three adults) stayed at this B&B for 6 nights in early September. We were recommended this B&B by a travel agent though we did the booking ourselves. We paid E93 a night for the room and breakfast. This had to be paid in cash so if you are coming directly from the airport get some Euros from the ATM there.
We took advantage of their door to door service which was great as we were dreading the train trip and walking down unknown streets with luggage it costs E45 flat.
The room was very large with an en suite bathroom. The bath was a sit down affair with no way to affix the shower head to the wall for washing off. There was a bidet which was a waste of space for us.
The main bed was OK but the third was a trundle and not that comfortable for an adult daughter. The ceiling was high and the floors were cool as they were marble. This made for a comfortable air temperature when it got hot. Also there was a cross breeze between the bathroom window and the bedroom window which helped dry clothes hanging in the bathroom.
We thought that the room being way inside the building it would be quiet but not so. Our window looked out onto a monastary which was nice as you could hear the nuns singing. Unfortunately you could also hear the late night drinkers and car traffic until the early hours of the morning. I think they used the street as a short cut.
The breakfast was another thing. We like our coffee strong but the Italians havge it all over us. We were also served pink orange juice (made with blood oranges) which was nice when you got used to it. The rest of the breakfast you can forget. Prepackaged croissants and dry toasts and sweet biscuits, no cereal, fruit or yoghurt. We ended up going down to the nearby supermarket (very good by the way) to get something edible. And yes, the smoking (which is everywhere in Italy) was a little too much.
The hotess was pleasant but spoke very limited English and they use the room we had breakfast in for their own cooking and smoking.
Good things about the location though. We were close to the Colosseum, the Forum so we could walk. Nice to see it at night as well - a very different view from the daytime crowds.
Close to the Cavour metro which we used a lot and the local internet cafe (the B&B does not have internet) and great gelati places as well as good spots for dinner.
The location was great, the room OK and with a bit of extra care over breakfast and no smoking this would have been OK.
We used valet service again to get back to the airport.

  • Liked — Proximity to metro and Forum area
  • Disliked — Poor breakfast and noisy location

“Not advised”

In a 5 week vacation, the Red Rose was the worst accommodations we had. The room was very smokey and the owners would smoke in the kitchen, making all the hallways and lobby area very smokey as well. The shared bathroom was clean, but the shower lacked a curtain and was awkward. Also, the breakfast started out fine, but got worse day by day with fewer options until by the last day there was no breakfast. The bed was uncomfortable and the furnishings were outdated (like staying at grandma's) and a little odd.

“Cute B&B, good value”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 25 September 2006

The location of this B&B was pretty great - the forums, and colloseum were just down the street, and there was a metro stop just five minutes away. The owner, Lucca, was very hospitable, and the breakfast lady told entertaining stories (in Italian), while we ate. The room was huge, and looked out on a monestary. Peaceful, except we seemed to also be right over an auto garage, and heard grinders during the day (and animated conversations into the night.) This didn't take away from our enjoyment of the stay, however, since you can't really ask for central location and dead quiet all at once. Breakfast was average, and a little quirky - all the people staying there sit around a table together. There is a grocery store and several good restaurants just down via Cavour from the place, and a laundromat just up the same road. I'd reccommend it.

  • Liked — The location and friendly service
  • Disliked — I liked pretty much everything.
  • Tips/Secrets — There is an amazing Indian restaurant just down via Cavour (I think it's called Sitar.) Best I've ever had.

“Friendly, good price, clean”

My daughter and I planned a week in Rome basically at the spur of the moment. We chose the Red Rose off the Hostelworld website. At the time of our booking Lucas the owner of the B&B emailed me detailed maps and good directions as to how to get to the B&B from the Termini Station. We found the rooms to be clean, lots of clean towels, a basic breakfast of rolls, crossants, tea, coffee, jam and sometimes yogurt.

The rooms themselves were a "little tired" but the rooms had high ceiling and were very spaceous.

We were within walking distance for most of the sites in Rome, the Vatican was a short bus ride over the river.

Anna Rosa and Lucianna did there best to make us feel comfortable and I really enjoyed getting to know them both, the communication got better as the week progressed. My italian and their english.

Considering the very expensive rates for hotels proper in Rome, I felt we got what we paid for. Clean rooms, safe area, walking distance to most sites, quiet at night, bite in the mornings, and I really liked that I had a fridge to use for a cold beer in the evening.

“Mediocre place in Rome”

Like the other reviews, this place was adequate but definitely different than the pictures listed on the website. It is a bargain find, for lack of a better description. It was clean, and convenient to the metro stop, and not too far from tourist sites.
