“Staff were rude. Rooms weren't clean!”

Well I stayed in this Hostel for 3 nights with 2 other friends. The first two nights we had a private twin share room. We turned up early in the morning to leave our bags but couldnt check into 3pm (normal procedure so no problem!). We were told to come back anytime from 3pm onwards to check in. We came back at 5pm after a day of sightseeing to check in. Check in process was quick and good. However when we got to our room the room had not been cleaned after the previous guests had been in there. Beds not made, towels all over the floor, bins full, bathroom floor wet and a BIG suprise left in the toilet!! We went down to ask for a room change and were told we had to wait 1 hr for the room to be cleaned as they had forgotten to clean that room.

At this moment we were having a few laughs thinking it was just a funny experience. Had a shower that night and the bathroom flooded from the shower! Still were having a few laughs at this stage.

We were sitting at reception and some girls were asking the staff for advice on where to go for the day/what to see and the staff were being very rude to the girls and offering her wrong advice and making all these jokes when they left.

When it came to check out on the morning we checked out I went up to request for a password for wifi at 9am (check out is at 10am!) and was told we were not allowed on Wi-fi on the morning of departure! The lady was very rude. We told her that was ridiculous as all the other hostels we have been to (and we've been to quite a few) did not have the rule. She replied that they weren't like other hostels. We told her that we were going to give a very negative review and told her about the way the room was when we first arrived there. Her simple snappy reply was "well did you let the staff know about this at the time you checked in?" our simple reply was "yes". She eventually gave us a password for free wi-fi but with reluctance.

There was one helpful staff member that worked here but overall I found the staff to be rude and unhelpful. Not to mention the rooms unclean. I won't be going back there. Would prefer to pay a little extra for a budget hotel or for a slightly more expensive hostel.

“for a few days it's ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 January 2012

It's a nice place but a bit dirty. They used to have free "pasta" at night, but it's just rubbish food. The breakfast is really poor too. Italian bread way too hard to chew. However sheets and bed were fine.

“Disappointed we only stayed one night :(”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 10 October 2011

Alessandro was a huge relief after the 2 less-than-perfect ones we had stayed in before. The staff was friendly and more than happy to help us plan our days in Rome. The facilities were clean/spacious and there was plenty of hot water, bedding, storage, bathrooms, and laundry units to go around. We had all the extra amenities we needed to refresh ourselves and continue on our trip. If you need ANYTHING at all (condoms, toothpaste, t-shirts, playing cards, wine, etc) they probably have it in a vending machine somewhere on the premises. They even had special pizza/pasta nights and free breakfast.....but get there early, you will have a lot of competition from your fellow guests. My only complaint was the shower/toilet combos and the clogged drains, but overall this place was better than many of the hotels we stayed in in Europe. It may not have been as personal of an experience as some of our other hostels, but made up for it in other ways.

“Good hostel, great staff”
4 of 5 stars Reviewed 23 September 2011

The hostel was clean, secure and very well located - within a 10-15 minute walk of the Coliseum. We got to the hostel before check in and were able to dump our bags in there storage room. The guys on reception were friendly and helpful - they gave us a map, directions to the places we wanted to go after arriving and a good restaurant recommendation (and a discount!). The room was clean and the beds comfortable, not the best hostel I've stayed in but definitely very good (especially for Rome!).

“Overprice and impersonal - one of the worst hostels I've been to”
2 of 5 stars Reviewed 20 September 2011

I don't expect massive service when I get to a hostel but the service here was useless to say the least. We arrived at 2.40 and were told check in was at 3 on the dot so we had to wait - while we did so we used the hour internet your allowed each a night (don't get me started, oh and they say the internet works all over the hostel it doesn't)

In a city like Rome you expect a small introduction - here is a map here are where the main sites are what do you want to see etc not at Alessandro. We had to ask for the map. Fortunately we'd been to Rome recently so knew what to do

We also had a very early flight out and were trying to organise how to get out to the airport. This proved impossible for their staff, aside from recommending the bus service they sell tickets for (and presumably get commission) which arrived too late for us they were stuck telling me I had to get a taxi. Wrong - the lady at the information desk down the road sorted me out in no time.

This place was overpriced and definitely not worth the time wouldn't recommend at all.
